I've only had it a couple of weeks. Functionally it is very solid and runs well so far... but, there are a few things that I should warn others about. To hook it up via wire, both the network port and USB port are located in the center of the middle of the unit - you need to lift the entire scanner portion up to plug it in, then run the cables along a guide inside the machine leading out the back - very odd design. Every other printer I have used across the decades has ports on the outside. The quality of the print is pretty mediocre and the finished print is not very dark at all. Perhaps this is how the 'inkvestment' tech works to save you ink? Still, I've had cheap throwaway printers with better print quality to be honest. The printer tray has to be completely pulled out of the machine entirely and put on your desk in order to load paper, which is also odd in my opinion. I have not tried the fax portion but scanning is a breeze with one exception: in the scanner software (Control Center 4,) it uses a 'retry' or 'reload' icon to represent cropping instead of the typical frame corner icon you would expect, which is also on the help documentation. Once I figured out this error it runs great.

I was looking for a replacement for my Brother Color laser jet printer. It was time for replacement parts that cost more than a new computer. I decided to go to this inkjet printer after reading some good news about it. I also liked the idea of the much lower price of ink refills for their page capacity. Setup was a snap. It's mostly automated asking a few questions to determine the type of setup that will be used. So, far the print product is well above my expectations. First, I tried printing photos on plain paper. They were clear and the color matching was almost perfect. The print driver has an option to check for slow drying paper. The quality was still excellent and it reduced curling when the output was damp. Scanning, copying and faxing all work well. Copying offers the choice of color or black and white output. I found the copy to be a little lighter than the original. I would give it a 5 star rating if it wasn't for some design features. The paper tray only holds 150 sheets of plain paper. If you do a lot of printing, be prepared to refill often. The manual feeder for envelopes, heavy paper etc. is in the back. I have to turn the printer sideways since it is near a back wall. The ADF doesn't hold to many pages either and remember to put them "face down." The originals on most copiers and printers I have used go face up in the ADF. Overall I am very pleased with the purchase of this printer and I would recommend it to anyone who can cope with the few annoyances.

I had to replace my last brother printer and bought an HP oh bad idea, so I went on a search and found this Brother and it works great. It comes with the ink and works so easy, simple to use. Easy WIFI set up or wired and this printer will print super fast, makes great pictures and receives data very well, no waiting for it to recognize wireless devices. My devices recognize it and print great from phone, tablet, laptop the ink OMG the ink is so affordable. I really will never change brands if Brother keeps these printers affordable and the ink so long lasting.

I have used this machine for 4 years. Pros: Good color, reasonable ink replacement cartridge cost, Fax works well, feeder works well, slow printing (not for big jobs. just a copy here and there). Cons: I never got the scanner to work. Must hook the printer up to a cable from my Mac. Rarely ever worked wirelessly. Conclusion: It's $150. If you need a color copier and fax machine that you don't mind hooking up to a cable, it seems to work year after year without fail. BUT!! You Must use Brother Ink. Do Not try and use substitutes.. it has some sort of sensor and will not print.

Brother's Customer Service has been called twice over the past 2 months since beginning to use it. The first time was to complete the Bluetooth connection and a second time when the connection with the MAC failed. Both times I was lost of how to solve my problem. Both times, Brother's Customer Service rep helped work through the process and then sent the written instructions via email for future reference. Scanning documents to files is a smooth process. The device performs well.

The machine has not set up on our HP system. the setup process for the wireless is on the verge of having my Microsoft certified nephew make the trip from Vermont to Virginia to attempt to enable the machine. we were taken off guard by this because we performed a lot of research before we bought the machine. our understanding of the setup of wireless was it being a easy to accomplish activity

The original printer developed paper feed problems. I called Tech Support; after troubleshooting; it was determined the printer had to be replaced. The refurbished printer was received quickly and has been working without issues. I didn't even have to return the original printer. So, I now have a spare paper tray to use for different paper.

Excellent product. Reliable, Cost effective, best value for AIO inkjet printer. the inkvestment you're making is not with the device itself (although it is still impressive) but with cartridge replacement. it is capable of fax,print,scan,copy,id copies,photos,greeting cards and more. Honestly nothing can beat it as far as value is concerned. I am very happy with this product and would highly recommend for small business or just for your home. the only gripe that i have with this particular design is the paper tray. they could've made a little more space inside as it only fits about 100 pages at a time. The setup? it took about 5 minutes for it to warm up and after downloading the software(i don't like using the CD it came with) it was up and running. no need to configure anything (apart from the size you want your prints to come out and the DPI of the ink which is adjustable by a slider) you're all set. Easiest and most comfortable printing solution and it is a pleasure using it as well. Everything from software to hardware is nsync. Hope this review helps someone looking to upgrade or perhaps you're a first time buyer and don't know which is the right one for you... well look no further.

We have been very happy with this printer in all aspects except one. It is easy to set up and use and does what is advertised as far as using less ink than other printers we've had. The only negative is that every day when we print for the first time it is not found on our network, so we have to turn if off and on again to wake it up. I have not been able to determine if this is our printer or our network...

There's much to love about the MFC-J985DW XL, except the speed, which is surprisingly slow for an office printer. I wasn't prepared for a printer this slow in 2017... That said, the ink is less expensive, more efficient, which counts for a lot... But can we improve the speed, please?
