prv file

When completing the Arkansas tax you have to check prev file or not prev filed. Each year I think it is talking about this return when it is really talking about last year returns. If you check no it will not let you file on line and you have to mail state returns in. Maybe a note would help with this.

Disappointed

Every year there is one or another glitch in getting Turbo Tax to correctly incorporate information from my JPM Chase 1099. This year it cost me a few hours of research and manual correction. I look forward to the day when this stuff works like it is supposed to (and like I am paying for).

Didn't like new format

Had 2 gripes. Missed previous format. Liked reviewing what I entered last year vs this year. I have several years returns on my computer. Also, when I went to bring up my return after saving to take a break, it always thought I was starting a new return from scratch. Had to go to Finder (Mac) and open the file had saved. Program should know what file to open.

Overall Excellence

I like the ease of entering the data, and guiding myself through the tax questions. The federal e-file is really great because I file right from my home office. A few hard spots are entering nuanced details of some taxes, and finding line item amounts I'm interested in checking. Like IRA roll overs. Or, our fine city has an "ART" tax. Was hard to find which question to enter info. But Turbo Tax came through as expected. Great results. Thanks.

Improve Navigation

I have used TT for years and know my way around it pretty well, but I still find certain aspects of the navigation awkward. For example, often when I revisit a topic to either just check it or to make changes, the program has erased certain answers that I've already given and requires me to answer them again, even though they are not the items I intend to change. Similarly, when I stop partway through and then come back to continue later, the program sometimes takes me to the beginning of a section rather than to the exact point I left off, so again I have to answer some questions over again. I would like to see much more precise navigation, so that I can go to exactly the spot I want and never have to re-answer questions I've already answered and that I know are already correct.

Easy but very in depth

I did my 2016 manually after using a CPA for 20 years. Took me days and so many forms to fill out and incredibly easy to misinterpret the IRS rules. Turbo Tax took a few hours for 2017 return and accurately produced a 20 page return (counting all the schedules) that was even more information than my CPA produced. If you want to know more about a certain item on your return, the answer is just a few clicks away. Good learning experience.

Overall Feeling About Returns

We generally find Turbotax very good on almost everything. What we found difficult was under income sources was our confusion in figuring out nontaxable sections of annuities and getting mixed up on various IRAs. However, we succeeded in these areas and we had a happy ending.

Confused

Something is amiss! After electronic filing my return, Turbo comes back and says I need to print certain forms and MAIL them? So I print out form 8453 and it says I need to mail form 8949 to the IRS - IF yes IF I ELECTED NOT TO REPORT MY TRANSACTION ELECTRONICALLY ON FORM 8949. Well I never made an election NOT to report the form electronically BUT I am unsure because Turbotax had me print out form 8453 AND there is no way to print or view only the forms that were electronically transmitted. I can print my return but there is no option for only the forms that were electronically filed? Confused and wasting a lot of time - NOT good!

Confidence

I've used Turbotax for several years now, and will continue to do so. I don't have a particularly complex return, but the speed with which I get through the entire process is refreshing. The steps are logical, and the software keeps you informed as to what is coming, and the opportunity to go back if necessary. I have confidence in their security precautions.

Great Tax Filing Tool

Turbo Tax has trouble handling a"Health Insurance Buyout". The step by step processes it as compensation for services provided in the tax year by a self employed contractor working for the payer. This "Buyout" is a retirement benefit and does not require a schedule C. Turbo Tax will only process this "Buyout" correctly only if after entering the 1099-Misc you go to the 1099-Misc work sheet and click "Other Income" in Box 7 of the worksheet after entering amount for 1099 Box 1. Do not answer questions about this entry. If this is done the schedule C problems will not be created. Although the "Health Insurance Buyout" is not a common or pervasive retiree benefit offered by employers, many School Districts around the county offer the "Buyout" option to employees who have health insurance coverage elsewhere such as spousal benefits. In such a case it is cheaper for the School District to offer the benefit as a fractional payment directly to the retiree rather than paying the full preium to the insurer. Turbo should handle this in the step by step.
