Opening page

Please don't keep asking do you want learn about updates to the tax law. Ask it once when the return is first started and then skip it each time the return is opened. And for goodness sake, don't ask the user to confirm the fact that they don't want it. IT'S A NO BRAINER. Why annoy the user?

Turbotax Premier

Federal taxes are obviously their forte. The free phone help is great, albeit fairly hard to attain. You have to google it, enter your version and then they give you a number to call. I suppose the number rotates, because I had to use a different number the 2nd time. State taxes for my state imported everything but offer almost zero guidance. Everything seemed okay on the printout.

2017 Review

If there are no problems completing your tax papers, then TurboTax is an easy and affordable way to get the job done. However, if you need clarification, have questions, etc. it becomes very cumbersome. You will spend a lot of unnecessary time flipping through all of the previous FAQ's/questions that others have previously asked when trying to find a match for your particular issue. It took me 2 days to finally find a real phone number, however the guy called me the following day and was extremely helpful and didn't rush me in any way. I had already submitted my question to "the turbotax community" and on day 2 I got several responses which were also helpful. So depending on your timeframe requirements to get your taxes completed, if waiting several days for an answer isn't a big deal then kudos to TurboTax for this as well.

Calculations great, printing not so

I've been using TurboTax since 1992, and I usually go straight to the forms I need. This year I decided to try "Guide me through everything". While it didn't surprise me with any new deductions, it was extremely easy and not noticeably longer than my previous method. I was happily surprised that I didn't have to input any extra data to finish my Virginia taxes. However, after e-filing my federal return, I waited two weeks before attempting to print my Virginia return for mailing. Neither "Print/Save for our Records" nor "File a Return" produced a screen from which I could do that. Very annoying. Ther used to be a menu option for Program Help, as opposed to Tax Help, which would tell you the steps to get to any particular function of the program. Now the Help menu and the Help Center both produce a screen to "search the community". I don't want to hope some other user had my problem and found a way to solve it; I want a programmer or equivalent to list the steps I have to take, to get to the "Print a return for mailing" page.

Access to Answer Questions

I used Turbo Tax Premier for many years and the 2017 upload of the 2016 data was missing several lines of data. I tried starting a new tax return from the 2016 file both with 2016 software loaded and without, but no luck. So my 2016 to 2017 comparison was useless. This is not good!

Bad year for Turbo Tax software

The software changed a lot this year, and I won't be using it next year. I was unable to use the It's Deductible files I had online because the program wanted access to my Key chain password. I had to reenter every by hand again. Very time consuming process. Other things in the software made me question the accuracy of the software and I often had to recheck things.

Buggy

Was able to answer all questions asked as like last year. However skipped over many questions until it found errors that needed fixed. Will not let you enter many stock sells. Beware if you have ore than a 100 or so sells in a year. Had many errors at the end would not save and stopped working it got stuck in a loop until I rebooted my computer.

Not world class software

I don't think TurboTax is a class act. A couple examples: * TurboTax does not automatically figure out if my CA state tax refund is taxable. I paid AMT last year AND used TurboTax '16 and yet TurboTax '17 makes you figure this out for yourself by going back to last year's TurboTax and grinding through it laboriously. What don't you guys understand about software that you can't automate that process and make it invisible to the user? * At the very last stage in filing my return, TurboTax would NOT let me file because my employer put $1900+ towards CA-SDI. The limit for CA-SDI is $998. Why is this flagged at the very last step AFTER going through all the check routines??? I checked my W2 and sure enough, my employer got it wrong. So why am I blocked from filing an accurate return that reflects my actual W2??? I figured out a way to finesse this rediculous problem, but it was 20 minutes of thrash before I got there. Thank you TurboTax may I have another. * There are numerous other clunky aspects to TurboTax. It is anything but slick. Seriously, do you guys talk to your customers?

you should not be charging to file state returns for one account. This really stinks and makes me want to ditch using your software after 20+ years of using it.

Wasted my time on state return

eFiled federal return without problem. AFTER paying Turbotax to efile my state return, the program returned an error that said one of my entries (apparently obtained off the federal return) had too many characters. There was no way to resolve this issue so the only choices were to change my federal return after is was already efiled, or file the state return on paper (all 75 pages) and just lose the money already paid to Turbotax. Researching the problem on the internet revealed many others with the same problem! I won't be dumb enough to pay to efile my state return in the future!
