A little disappointed

I have used TurboTax since it was first sold, several years. I love it and would not consider any other way to file. HOWEVER, this is the first year I have encountered any problems. I downloaded latest updates on 4/13 (which ought to be late enough to have all the latest fixes) but still encountered two errors. First, and most bothersome, the "Is it Deductible" function in the itemized contributions area did not work at all!!!! I have used this for years and had no problems, but this year, I could not add items to a contribution list. The pop up screen that should have included the selected items list, their value and total only had the item list, and no further info or navigation buttons. So I was stuck, and since it was down to the deadline, I had to manually enter values of contributions. Second, in interest income, I had a single 1099 that had interest shown in both box 1 and box 3. Further, the box 3 federal bond interest had been previously reported. While TT accepted this input and did all the calculations correctly, it flagged this as an error during review. I closely reviewed the form and saw there was actually no error, but TT would not allow the e-file submission until I split the 1099 into two different forms, with the line 1 interest on one form, and line 3 interest on a different form.

Software Glitch

I've been using TT for at least 15 years, but this is the first year I've had software errors. Finding a fix was extremely difficult. I was almost to the point of hiring a CPA to complete my taxes, but tried a fix that was close in error number, and it worked. After exploring in depth and finally locating a fix, I would have appreciated the ability to talk to a live person from Inuit. Next year I am not sure I will use TT, especially with all the new tax law changes.

Turbo Tax 2017

I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and always feel comfortable that i am getting the best return i can. Don't make the mistake that you don't have to think, read and research if you use TurboTax or any other program like it. Turbo Tax makes the process a lot easier but but I don't like to blindly follow so I try my best to really understand what I am doing and TT is a great aide in that process. Plus it is very difficult to keep up with and interpret tax law and TT really helps with that, as well. I would recommend TT for anyone that needs to file a Tax Return no matter how complicated it is.

Foreign Income Return

Generally went well. There is a place to enter deductions from foreign earned income and the explanation is confusing. Then where you enter trips to the US, I thought that all income earned while in the US was considered, but apparently it is only when you were working (i.e., vacation time is not considered income earned in the US, at least that's my interpretation). The explanation was less than clear cut. One frustration was that as I was moving forward and back on the foreign income section, an incorrect foreign income amount appeared. I don't know where it came from and I couldn't get rid of it. I had to delete the file and start over. That wasn't good. A second issue was that as I was going back and forth, I suddenly seemed to be getting questions related to the Physical Presence Test, but I qualify under Bona Fide Residence. It didn't seem to cause a problem, but it was disconcerting. Cleaning up the foreign earned income section would be helpful.

state tax review and filing

I have used Turbo Tax for many years and like your program. However this year I am very unhappy with state tax. The fee , reviewing and printing a file copy. In past years I could copy and file by mail. You charge extra for state tax program and force me to e-file and then you let me make copy. I am not able to see what I am filing. If this is very poor system will make me consider using a different tax program in future. I would appreciate your comments.

Remember stuff for me next time

Please be more explicit about loss carryovers--what was from prior year, what will be carried forward, and how carryovers affected tax. Also, needs to be more explicit about all options when W-2 is wrong. Final review should show carryover used, carried forward, and marginal tax rate, and special taxes assessed.

Overall, the question and answer format works. However, each year, in the correction and review section, I get a message that Box 12a cannot be greater than the local distribution. The 1099-R form leaves the local and state distribution boxes blank and only fills in the gross distribution at the top of the form. Issues: First, there is no 12a box on my form; second, the directions are so short and confusing that it takes some experimenting to finally realize that the local and state distribution boxes need to be filled in on the form with the same number as the gross distribution. This could be explained in a much simpler fashion.

Got worst this year for college expenses

TT is not able to account for the tuition expense against QTP 529 plan withdrawal. It tells me my income is too high for tuition credit, but 529 plan does not have income limit. It should just include the information in efile, specifically 1099-Q, 1098-T and Student Info Wks. Since 2013, I have been working with IRS to clear additional tax assessments after efiling via TT. For 2016, I upgraded TT to premier to see if it resolves the issue, but...! For 2017, it got even worst with TT not even allowing me to input 1099-T. After going back and forth couple of times, I found a way (out of the flow of data input) to put in 1099-T. Now, I will have to file a paper copy to include all info to not pay any taxes on 529 plan withdrawal.

Examples not complete

Was shocked to find I owed $2150, which included underpayment for 2016, for State taxes when in prior years I owed little or nothing. Turns out the problem was the type of State pension I checked. The samples under State and Local Governments were not all inclusive, but looked as if they were. So I checked none of above, generating the huge tax.

Great Job Turbotax

I have used turbotax since it was introduced. Over the many years of use I have never had any issues or problem with my taxes. I feel that I have always received the most return that I could get by using turbotax. The features that help you through the process always make me feel confident that all the "I"s are dotted and that no mistakes have been made. When I submit my return I do not worry that I missed something that will come back to bite me. I highly recommend turbotax for the novice to the experienced user. One of the best features is seeing what you entered for each item and comparing it with this years inputs. This help one making sure you are on the correct path and not making any mistakes or missing something. Thanks turbotax
