15 plus years with turbotax

I've always filed with itemized deductions which means a lot for entries so it is time consuming, however I feel that Turbotax covers all possibilities and nothing is left to chance. Almost every year I run across one minor software glitch such as having to "correct" an item 3 or 4 times before I stop getting the question prompts for the potential "error". It happened again this year.

Generally Excellent Tax Filing Program

This is a generally excellent Tax Filing Program. I have been using the Premier Edition for several years. A couple of suggestions --- Many people are stuck with the very unfair Alternative Minimum Tax. After entering a lot of data on deductions, you find out that many of these deductions will be disallowed. Could there be a "look ahead" feature added that would suggest that you probably will be subjected to the AMT? Another item that probably only affects a limited number of people concerns the reporting of Royalties. The procedure, when applied to things like music copyrights, is complicated and confusing. It seems like this would be an easy thing for TurboTax to fix.

Worked well

Some form data did not accept, and had to be re-entered at the end in review page. "It's deductible" list could have a little more fidelity/variety, but otherwise you can find most categories of donations. Overall it is very thorough and audit check is also nice. Have used it for several years now.

Good Product

Up to 2015 I filed Jointly and the program automatically prompted and assisted me in completing form 1116. It always gave me 2 option: Schedule A Deduction or Tax Credit. Due to my wifes passing, I have had to file single from 2016 till present. For both those years I had trouble trying to complete the form thru the programs automatic process. It would not auto populate and I have had to enter the information manually now for the last 2 years. One of things that I believe affected it was that my foreign taxes were greater than the $300 limit I discovered thru research. The program did not reference or guide on this requirement. Second, my 1099Div lists a total foreign tax paid in box6. In my case, it involves a mutual (which I define as RIC) and 1 company. There are no instructions as to how to properly fill in the appropriate information so that I show the company and the RIC on the form. In my case I need to show both on the form. Program has no prompts to provide this information. I tried to follow someone' proposal on the forum to create dummy payees but I could not get it to work. Maybe I was doing something wrong. In the end, I went into the form and filled in the appropriate investments in letters A and B. There should be a process in the program than knows you have paid foreign taxes and then prompt you to list them. When I entered on the form I could only check box A because if I wanted both Box A and B to be seen, it would not. Could only check 1 at a time. The form, as manually entered by me, did remain accurate. My point is that I need instruction by which I can enter 2 or 3 companies/RIC that have taxes accrued in box 6 on the 1099div. The program does not prompt a step by step in that case nor do I find instructions. If you read this and there is a method, I would most appreciate it if you would email me the process. Again, if the 1099div box 6 shows a total of 500 (for example) and 250 went to company A and 250 was for RIC B, how can I get the program to prompt me to fill both in for form 1116? I would rather not manually enter the entire form as I am doing now. Also I noticed that when it populated the dividend, it automatically went to the "ordinary" line. They were "qualified" on the 1099div that I had downloaded to the program. So I had to manually change that also from ordinary to the qualified line. So in the end I would appreciate something from Intuit on this subject or at least tell me where I can find the instructions on how to complete the form for the situation I have

Hard to do updates!

On Federal, unlike State, very difficult to print Estimated Tax forms without printing entire tax return. I just got my last K-1 (1065) forms and had to update Turbo Tax with latest information, including estimated taxes. I do a lot of stock trading, so estimates need to be updated, reflecting success or lack thereof in trades through the year. Turbo Tax does not allow me to do this easily and then print new revised estimated tax forms. Yes, it can be done, but took me the better part of an hour to load the two new K-1s (easy), adjust the resulting refund to apply to next year (difficult), and then calculate (easy) and print (hard) new estimated quarterly payments, Fed and state, for the second half of the year.

So Glad it's over

Find the step by step guidance helpful. Prevents you from overlooking items and ensures that you file all the correct schedules. Use the software for both us and our adult children's filings. Still find the AMT calculations confusing, but think that is just the law and not necessarily the software. I believe that will all go away next year. Two suggestions: (1) show the limit amounts right at the start of the calculations rather than having to enter some information in before you realize you don't qualify for the deduct (Example-medical, investment costs, etc.) (2) Would have appreciated a look forward with the new tax laws based upon our current tax situation this year when you get to the end of the process and look ahead.

Problems with State

Your software does not work for State of TN, at least not for me. It totally messes up on stock dividends and tax free bonds. The instructions are confusing and it seems that I have to do all the calculating myself. Because I've had problems in previous years, this year I gave up early, and filed totally manually.

Used for 15 years

I have used Turbotax for over 15 years. Had a friend who had used a few years previous and entered my Tax Accountant prepared returns using his software and matched to the penny. I currently use Premier and it handles my 4 K1s and stock accounts with no problems.

I have been using Turbo Tax for several years. The electronic transfer of data from the previous year return and from third parties is very time saving. Each year my effort gets quicker and less stressful. The prompts I find helpful and with my experience I find going directly to the completed forms for my review very efficient an easy. The only beef I have is that I almost missed my capital loss carryover because Turbo Tax did not transfer it from the previous year tax record. Also I got my buddy doing his taxes using Turbo Tax last year and again this year.
