Every year filing taxes seems to be more complicated. turbotax software dos a good job of simplifying the process in terms I understand. I want to pay my taxes, I just don't want to miss something or make a mistake. turbotax helps me overcome that fear of the dreaded tax Form.

Clear explanations for complex rules were exceedingly lacking, I had to look up a lot of supplemental information in order to file my taxes. In the end it told me I had to also mail some documents, the document was incomplete and it did not provide more information on what supplemental material needed to be mailed with it. Turbotax was not worth the money this time.

I like to determine my final estimated tax payment due in January by making a quick estimate using Turbo Tax and entering data I know for that tax year plus estimates for other data. However, when I start doing my actual taxes I tend to overlook some values that were previously entered as estimates. It would be nice if one can enter estimated values that can be flagged by being in red or grayed values that must be modified before the taxes can be finalized.

I've used turbotax for as long as I can remember. The ability to import 1099s is worth everything. Where I struggled this year was the way turbotax handles K-1s. It took me 10 hours or more over 2 weekends to enter 3 K-1s and get them entered correctly. I never could figure out how to take the foreign tax credit and complete the information, so I took deductions. The on-line help section helped with much of the issue, but not all. Still, I will stick with turbotax and recommend it.

For the first time in many years of using TurboTax, I was disappointed. The State of Illinois raised its tax rate in the middle of 2017. So income in the first half of the year was taxed at a different rate from the rate in effect during the second half of the year. Schedule SA allowed state taxpayers to recalculate their state tax liability based on when the income was received during the year. This form was missing from TurboTax. I procured the form from the IDR and filled it out myself. It saved me several hundreds of dollars in state taxes from what TurboTax would have made me pay. And of course I had to file this return the old fashioned way: snail mail!

Have used Turbo tax for several years, and having the previous years information at hand makes completing the current years return quite simple. A lot of questions, but it pays to be complete to make sure you get all the deductions you are allowed. Another easy and safe years filing done!

Turbo Tax keeps track of info from previous years such as capital loss carryover, previous year income, etc. I hate reading instructions and filling out forms. Turbo Tax takes all of that away. I mentioned in my cons that the first pass included schedule K-1 data from the previous year. I was able to find information in the Help feature that indicated I did not need the information and the steps to take to delete it. In summary, thumbs up; I'll be using Turbo Tax again next year.

Generally, the software performed as expected. As noted in the snapshot, the downloading capability was a real time saver and probably prevented data entry errors and possibly carpal tunnel syndrome. The delay in the availability of the 8606 form was annoying, holding up the ability to file by a few days.

Past years, it has always taken me back to the last place in my work when I reopened, this year it will only do that when I double-click on the saved file. It crashed two or three times when I tried to re-open my file. It tried to do an "estimated tax" calculation, even though I had not reported any payment of estimated taxes - only withholding. Then when it got confused it asked for entries on a specific form that I was unfamiliar with. I had to try twice to delete that form before it would proceed.

I have two brokerage accounts that I have been sweating, since I have never had to deal with gains and losses in my returns prior to this year. In "Premium" I was elated to find that I was able to download my tax documents directly from Schwab. The program had the results completed in seconds. It would have taken me hours to figure out how to proceed. Thank you Turbo Tax again!
