Fast and Easy to Use

I have been using Turbotax for about 15 years. Importing my data and reminding me of prior years sources of income, donations, and investments makes it easy for me to manage. I have only had 1 minor tax return correction over the years and have felt very confident that Turbotax is helping file accurately each year.

Use it every year

As always, it's the way to do your taxes. I have been using it for years and years. Like everything about it, and now that I have so many years of TurboTax, I understand the "eco-system". However, I would like to see an expanded easy-step section on entering bond income, bond premium amortization, and accrued interest paid at purchase. While it all works as-is, a step by step approach would significantly simplify the process.

Solid software with a few issues

Overall the software works. It seems a bit slow on a modern computer with lots of RAM and CPU... Oddly after first day of every operation taking 1 minute+ (nothing else was slow on same PC) everything was okay the next day. It doesn't allow you to import last year's turbotax data once you've started filing, so I had to start over again once I got that. Importing financial institution data failed to work behind firewall (worked at home). Doesn't allow find-in-page searches. All minor gripes; overall it got me through the process but just took a few extra hoops to do so.

Still need more figured out

The point to TurboTax is because my taxes are complicated, and I really don't know how to do them myself, and don't want to hire an accountant. For some reason TurboTax hasn't figured out how to put numbers from my investments where they need to be, even though I import all the info. I still have to manually enter things like dividends, capital gains, and foreign taxes. I don't always know how to do the calculations and where to put things, so I still need to use an accountant, even after finishing TurboTax. It also doesn't calculate the difference between my Housing Allowance and housing expenses without me doing a manual entry.

About as user friendly as the tax code

Bug: SchA, line 30 won't stay checked to force itemization when Married filing Separately with itemized deductions totaling less than Standard. (IRS requires both returns itemize or use standard deduction.) Answering interview question with MFS- Spouse Itemizing deductions wouldn't help. Big hassle to merge 2 single returns to MFJ. Bigger hassle to then go to MFS. Carryovers have to be done manually and require Overrides if last year's form is transferred in. Suggestion: Make Filing Status change entries when transferring in last years return(s).

Obvious Mistake caused me to amend

Upon submitting my return, and reviewing my resulting 99 page document, I came across an obvious error with my ordinary dividends. They were doubled from a financial institution that I had automatically imported into TurboTax from Capital One. TT listed this value twice, as a slightly different name. Besides their software making this mistake, this should also have been an obvious catch in their software review. (The dollar amounts were identical to the penny, 6 digits). The end result is that I now need to file an amended return to get my extra $400 refund. And likely delay my return for months?

Quick and painless

I've been using Turbotax for over 10 years, and when I finally get myself to sit down to do my taxes each year, I am so happy by how quick and easy it's done with Turbotax. It takes me longer to gather all my paperwork then to actually do the filing.

Much Better than Manual, but not 100% Accurate

TurboTax does save A LOT of time, but you still need to review your returns carefully since it doesn't always apply all the information you supply in the way you think it is going to or should. In particular, part-year resident allocations are not provided and estimated tax function is EXTREMELY limited.

too complicated

The product kept asking me to check on tax-exempt pension..I had no tax-exempt pension..I kept going back to the page it showed me and made sure that no dollar amount was listed. It said I should make adjustments on Federal return, which I double checked. No adjustments were needed. I finally said that I would file by mail and I still had problems.

Two Comments

1. What-If Wksht for 2018 did not include the 20% deduction for income from a limited partnership. 2. List of federal forms is cumbersome to use. They should be arranged alphabetically, then numerically by form number, or vice versa, not a combination, which is how they are listed presently.
