Illinois State Tax Return

For the first time in many years of using TurboTax, I was disappointed. The State of Illinois raised its tax rate in the middle of 2017. So income in the first half of the year was taxed at a different rate from the rate in effect during the second half of the year. Schedule SA allowed state taxpayers to recalculate their state tax liability based on when the income was received during the year. This form was missing from TurboTax. I procured the form from the IDR and filled it out myself. It saved me several hundreds of dollars in state taxes from what TurboTax would have made me pay. And of course I had to file this return the old fashioned way: snail mail!

Farm Cash Rent

turbo tax (premier-2017) does not handle farm cash rents well. It asks you if you have Farm Rental Income, then it wants you to go to Rents and Royalties, but there is nothing there to continue Farm Rents. Turbotax wants to handle it as a real estate rental (housing for example) and does nothing to automaticly direct you to, or link it to, the proper farm rental form 4835 which is key to all farm income and expense. I found that going to "Forms" and directly to the form 4835 was the only way this could be done... then you have to find and manually link the 4895 to the proper 1099-misc form. All this could (should) be done in interview, quickly and with less confusion than plodding through all of Rents and Royalties.....

Peace of Mind

Expert guidance and links to the applicable IRS Guidelines and the convenience of the 'Its Deductible' blue book to estimate allowable values of donated items was a big plus. Walking you through each area is like having an agent holding your hand along the way. The Smart Check helps be another set of eyeballs before you file. Love the option to select the Audit Defense if needed. Simple to use and makes Tax Time far less mindboggling.

Refunded

I have used Turbo Tax for years due to its ease of use, and my father already buys it. This was the first time I had sold a home and it handled it wrong stripping my return. On review even though I made no changes it refunded it. I don't know why but it caused me a great amount of stress!

Quick and Easy

I have used this product for years. It is very easy to use. All you need to do is gather the documents that you need to report on, enter information and follow directions. It is that easy. This product is terrific. I would highly recommend this to everyone. FYI - the one part (which is out of your control) is waiting for the documents that you need to start entering the information.

Turbotax 2017 -- a winner!

TurboTax 2017 worked very well for me -- couldn't ask for more. However, I must admit that I didn't have any investments, real estate issues, inheritance, foreign finances, etc., so I can't comment on how well they would have been handled. I have used TurboTax for years and expect to continue to do so.

TGIO - Thank God It's Over

I've used TurboTax for many years and I think this is the easiest year filing ever . Thanks for streamlining and not including the graphics of actual people in this edition, kind creeped be out :) I'll be back next year. Not at all intimidating and all bases are covered.

TurboTax Failed Mac Users in 2017

Intuit sold a defective bug ridden product to mac users for the 2017 tax filing year which upon attempting to e-file would result in the result of "cancelled". On 4/12/18 after weeks of collective efforts by users to help diagnose and help each other, Turbo Tax admitted this issue would not be resolved by tax day on 4/17. This is a complete failure. Doing the accounting is great, but e-filing is why people purchase the product. I am one of many long-term users that will question if Intuit will get my business in 2019. I have been a brand ambassador as a CPA for years, and this year you made me embarrassed by my advice. Despite finishing my taxes early, I spent three weeks reading blogs, uninstalling, re-installing, acquiring additional Macs, and even considered getting a PC. All while Intuit asked users when they were available from 9-5pm Monday-Friday to help diagnose issues. Make this right Intuit. And maybe next year work a few late night or weekends. Your disappointed users did.

Easy, great guidance,

Once you have to program loaded and the previous years information transferred it is a very simple process to follow. You are walked through every step. However, making sure your computer has the latest Op system and transferring your data to another computer can be confusing (I'm admittedly NOT computer savvy.

Confusing at times

I initially started the return in January but had to stop and wait for brokerage data to be available in late February. On returning it did not appear to have what I had previously entered. Then between pulling info from Quicken and then downloading data from the brokerage account I had some items entered twice. It took going back through all the entries to finally figure out what to delete. Sale of a second home being taken care of under the investments section was also a surprise. Finding where to apply this years refund to next year's estimated taxes was not as obvious as I would have expected.
