Adequate
Bought this because of an unusual heat wave in the usually-temperate San Francisco Bay Area. Normally, a/c just isn't needed. We used it to cool a small 2-bedroom apartment, which is above its pay grade, but then, what's "hot" to us doesn't compare to the load it would bear to cool one small room in Dallas or Tampa. It was easy to set up. Frigidaire was good about replacing parts that were damaged in transit, due to poor quality packaging. It does an OK job cooling the room it's in, especially with the head start it got by the nights dropping into the low 60s. Downsides are that it's noisy and the venting system is pretty ugly. It doesn't blow ice-cold at any setting.
Hey MamaT! In reviewing your portable air conditioner, model FRA093PT1, it is designed to cool an area of 400 square feet. During the cooling mode, your appliance will need to be exhausted out of a nearby window so that the warm exhaust air can be ducted outside. We welcome you to contact us directly should you have any additional questions. Kind Regards, Theresa
Great A/c!
Bought this a/c for my parents about 1 month ago. So far so good! It cools down our living room/dining area well. It's not a huge space but is bigger than a typical bedroom. I actually only bought it because there were no other portable a/c's available at the time. There were also no reviews on it so i bought it on a whim. Here are some pros/cons Pros: -its portable (duh) -2 steps required to put it together -cools area -easy to use and comes with remote control -its a nice looking unit -the vent closes on its own when its turned off which is great! that way it keeps all the dust out Cons: -the 2 step assembly was very frustrating, the plastic coil tube would not stay attached to the a/c unit and when i would try to attach the coil to the window attachment it would also not hold. It's made of plastic so it feels kind of flimsy. I actually had to tape the coil to the a/c unit and the window attachment to avoid it coming off. Because of this it makes it difficult to move it anywhere else -its kinda loud -it was pricier than other units i saw online -the size is quite big, its not HUGE but its large and it does require a designated space because u can't just squeeze it in anywhere. We have it placed next to our couches and its actually a little taller than the couch (the couch is lifted). I definitely recommend checking out other units. u might be able to get a better quality unit for a similar price. Its not a bad buy but i think the fact the coil is plastic leaves a lot to be desired since i paid so much for it. I also didnt like that i had to reinforce with tape so the coil would stay attached. I have not complaints of the function of the unit because it works perfectly.
A real review
Ok... I live in a converted basement bachelor pad. It gets unbearably hot in the summer. I had tried a conventional air conditioner, but due to the inability of the basement windows to allow in enough air to keep the AC cool, that was a nono. I started looking for alternatives and came up with the portable ACs as a possible solution. I can tell you that I heard all of the knocks against it and nearly said I would pass, but one day I was in Best Buy and noticed this model, which I had just researched in some magazine. I asked all my routine questions and the guy was ok with his description, but he wasn't convincing me. A stock guy came through and noticed me debating on whether to get it. He walked over and said, "Yeah... this is it. This thing gets so cold, you'll turn it off." I asked him about noise and he walked me over to a different department. He said, "Let me plug it up and you can see for yourself." I had to stop him because the air felt sort of cold. "Shoot, it is on already, isn't it," I said. He looked and said, "You're absolutely correct!" I was hooked. I got it home... set-up was a breeze. You could only hear it if you are sitting by it and even then its not a nuisance. And you want to talk about cold... too often I had to turn it down AND close my bedroom door, because it would get viciously frosted in the apartment. My place has 4 rooms; the kitchen and dining room are open and overlap taken up spaces of 20' x 11' and 26' x 10'. My bedroom is separated by a door and about 30' x 16' and my studio, which can only be entered by going through my bedroom, is 15' x 8'. In every room you feel the AC's impact. The duct system for it was well designed and is easy to install. I really am happy I decided to get this unit and have talked 3 other peope to get the same model.
My first AC in 50 years
I live in Los Angeles (a few miles from the beach), with no ac or heat, we usually don't need it. Either i'm getting older or it's getting hotter, but this summer I had enough. Was delivered today and WOOOW, I had to go into another part of the house to warm up. We were amazed at how rock solid this appliance is. Vent attachment was the only tricky part. I'm not sure how long the quarter turn will hold. If needed, I could use duct tape.
Portable AC Wonderful!
Our central AC died last summer and rather than replace it during the busy season for hvac workers we opted to get this portable unit for the duration of summer in Michigan. We set it up in our combined kitchen/family room area. about 25' x 35'. we partially closed a hall leading to bedrooms (w/drape). It cooled the family room area and kitchen like a dream! It's a little noisy and the tv was turned up but for under $400 we had a comfortable home last summer. It removed the humidity from our home so that at night, when we turned off the unit, the bedrooms were comfortable with a couple fans. It was a great purchase for a very hot summer last year. We will pass it on to someone else this summer when our central ac is replaced. An excellent product!
Nice design
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Just the idea of a portable air conditioner is great, especially for those of us with unconventional windows in our homes. This particular unit saved us because of its ability to conform to almost any window.
Fantastic!! Great power, and quiet!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We bought this ac unit at the beginning of summer and I could not be happier with it. It's quiet, efficient, powerful, and has kept my home cool through even the hottest and mightiest of summer days. This was the best purchase I've made this year.
Works well.
Bought this earlier in the summer. It has worked well to take the edge off the heat and humidity. For hole drilling to the outside, a 4" would have been better regarding installing, but it worked out well in the end. We let the condensate drain with a hose down the stairs into a bucket, which held enough to let it run. IF we would have had forced air to circulate, it would have been best, but that is not the air conditioners fault. Hope it lasts many years.
Working pretty good so far
I bought this a few months ago, I haven't had to use it much, but it's working good. I love that I don't need to put water in it constantly like my other one. Also I like the auto setting that keeps the temperature at what you select. It is a little noisy, but for the price I can live with it. And when the temp. hit in the high 80's it will be my best friend.
Purchased one day ago, this product so far is "iffy". We had difficulty with the vent hose attachments. Vent hose is very inflexible and cheaply made. The first night we ran it all night and woke to find the vent hose laying on the floor and hot air blowing into the room. Managed to re-attach the vent hose and so far, it's cooling. Just want to warn you that installation is not as simple as claimed and quality of vent parts is not very good.
Hello Chezjude! Thank you for posting your concerns with your Frigidaire portable air conditioner. Your hose can be extended from its original length of 15" up to 55", but it is the best to keep the length to minimum required. Also make sure that the hose does not have any sharp bends or sags. If you have any additional questions, please contact us directly. Kind Regards
