So this thing uses batteries, the lid is small so debris collects all around edges, and the sensor stopped working (probably due to location and debris) after a few months, (tried replacing batteries- still would only open with buttons after sensor stopped working) It was not any good- ended up buying a foot one where entire top opens- way less messy and can wash it with a hose... this one really can't be cleaned another serious design flaw.

Had less than a year and the lid stopped working… I’ve been manually using it for another year… looking to buy another trash can and seen this with so many positive stars and actually thought about trying again but some ppl gave 5 stars and said it was a waste and not working?? Don’t buy… just don’t. You can get a cheaper manual trash can

I recently purchased this NINESTARS promotion at Walmart, I purchased this trash can because I have a small kitchen, and combining the trash and recycling is a great space saving feature. I went to assemble the new trash can, and found that the battery compartment was not manufactured correctly. There was excess plastic from the molding process that poked up in the middle of the bottom of the battery compartment. As a result, the batteries do not sit flush, thus not making contact with each other and not powering the trash can. I have included a pictures showing the issue. I have emailed Ninestars and sent them a message through their website... no response in over a week. I just tried calling them and their voicemail is full and cannot accept any more messages. What a poor excuse for customer service. Avoid Ninestars products... more like NOSTARS!

Even after reading some of the negative reviews of this can, I decided to take a chance on it. It's a nice-looking can, but didn't even make the six-month mark before it started "ignoring" us by not opening properly - even when pressed to open. Tried fresh batteries, it might work ok for a week or so, then back to just sitting there. Another negative: I have a Samsung vacuum which requires emptying a small canister into the garbage. With this can and it's smaller opening, the dust from the can would empty all over the top rim no matter how carefully I tried to avoid it. Yes, it has a one-year warranty, but that would involve sending the lid portion back to the manufacturer, at my expense for shipping. Even if they sent a new one, it's doubtful it would last any longer than the first one did. So...a pretty pricey can that really doesn't perform well. Purchased a similar size with step-on feature instead. Love it

My bad luck I would purchase a defective or non working one, the sensor is so off, and it opens and close on its own, when you put your hand over it it doesn't open wide enough and when it close it do not have a softer swing, very loud, I hope the review helps who want to purchase one, and test it thoroughly at the store.

5/10/22 Update: 8 months later. Lid does not close completely on the can anymore. It goes down then pops up about an inch. This is a major disappointment. I hope this does not become a problem with the others we have purchased. Leaving one star because the smaller can is still functioning currently; otherwise, would be a one or zero as it no longer functions as described. I trash can lid should close completely for all of the obvious reasons. Original review: Works as described. Durable. No issues. Have four NineStars cans now. Even gifted one, if that means anything. Have four so same review for both. Good product.

At first we liked this a lot. It is just the right size for 13 gal trash bags, and the black plastic bag holder is ingenious. The problem is that the motion detector has malfunctioned quite a bit. It randomly opens and closes on its own, and then when we need it to open it doesn't respond. We've had it 2 months and now need to find a different trash can. For what we paid for it I expected a lot more life.

Bought the first one, the trash can lid wouldn’t lift. Returned bought the second one tried to put the batteries in and it crumbled in my hands. Returned it. BTW the service and support from ninestars was absolutely terrible. I wish I could give no stars…

I ordered this because I had a similar one by the same manufacturer that I bought at Costco. Eventually it just stopped detecting motion. Unfortunately that model was no longer available so I bought this. The first one delivered came with a huge dent so I returned it and received another. Not a big deal. It happens. The reason for my 1 Star review is the design on this is terrible. At the top of the can, the rim has about a 1/8" lip on the inside so every single time I remove a bag, something gets caught up on the rim and makes it virtually impossible to get a bag out without a big struggle or ripping a whole in it. I do not recommend buying this product its terrible.

I think maybe if we hadn't had a Ninestar touchless trash can before this that maybe I'd view it more favorably. Our prior SimpleHuman trash can worked beautifully for 5 years and when it finally died, to replace it with the same brand would be almost twice as expensive as this one. It had great reviews so what the heck, let's try it. Bottom line is we're returning it and replacing it with the new version of the SimpleHuman can. This unit, the sensor doesn't always detect motion so it can be frustrating to get it to open, then it opens really quickly which can be handy, but then it closes at the same speed and does a very poor job of sensing if our hands are still in range and putting things in, so every day it would close on our hands. And, the way you put bags in and the design of the lid is poor. You put the bag in and need to use a separate ring and then fold the bag over the ring and into the can to get the bag not to show once the lid's in place. And that makes replacing a bag a pain in the butt. With the SH unit, the can opens a bit more slowly and a lot more smoothly than this unit, stays open a bit longer and does a great job of sensing if we're still in range, then closes slowly and smoothly. And there's no need for a separate bag ring, they designed the lid to actually cover enough of the sides that it covers the bag. What an idea. The SH is just a MUCH better design and execution. It's a lot more money, but you get what you pay for.
