Great unit but...
10 year old unit so take this with a grain of salt. This is a great unit and meets all our needs. But it does have one, I'll call it a design flaw. The fuel pump has a ground wire that needs to make good contact with the motor. The end that attaches to the motor is copper or brass and tends to corrode and break contact. Cost me a $100 to have a repair man come out and buff it with sandpaper. Hope they have corrected this.
This product works great!
My company purchased this generator at the recommendation of our electrician. We have a 20,000 sq ft facility (5k office, 15k warehouse). We looked into a 45-60kw standby generator but felt the cost was too high. We decided to try this unit with a manual transfer switch for our facility. One week after installation we lost power for 2 business days. This generator ran 2 HVAC office units, 6 modine gas heaters, 25 personal computers, 3 computer servers and related hardware, office telephone, fridge, half of the office and warehouse lights and more. If we could have hooked up the transfer switch to more of the breakers I think this unit would have powered almost the entire facility. It started and ran without skipping a beat. We spent a fraction of the price quoted for a built in standby unit. We would recommend this setup to any small business.
voltage fluctuates too much.
Product runs well right out of the box but I am concerned about using it on many items or long term. I am currently running a steady 1000W when our 1hp well pump starts the voltage will drop to 30V then spike to 159V. We didn't have this problem with our old Pramac 7500W generator but it only had a couple hundred hours on it when it quit. We needed a new one for water and this the only one available. Can't afford to be out of water for our horses or I would consider returning it for a better one. But have no idea how long that would be.
Awesome Home Back Up
Took it out of the box attached wheels and legs. Small problem with a punched out piece of metal still in one of the holes. A little bit of a pain to drill out but got it. Filled with oil and stabilized gas hit start button and off we went. Wired home interlock and plug in to breaker panel which was very easy. Shut main breaker off turned on 30 amp breaker and ran the entire home. Not oven or AC although it would run AC and furnace with some things turned off. I was running Well pump and sump pump as well as a refrigerator and freezer. Awesome machine so far. Looking forward to first power outage. I will be turning on the front porch lights to show off.
Works great for emergency backup power
After several years of wanting a generator for backup power during utility power outages, and several years of putting it off, I finally bought a Generac GP8000E. I chose this model because it just happened to be available where I was shopping and because of Generac's overall good reputation. I also wanted a generator in this 7500 to 10,000 watt category. I added a third-party mechanical lock-out mechanism and a 40 amp double pole back-feed breaker to my main breaker panel, and fed it through a 30-amp power inlet box. The mechanical lock-out acts as a manual transfer switch, in compliance with electrical codes and safety regulations. This keeps me, my generator, my house, and power company personnel all safe. This arrangement allows me to power my entire house (except my central air conditioning) all on the GP8000E. My historical electrical usage data indicated that during non-A/C months, I never drew more that 5000 watts from the power company at any given time. Thus this 8000 watt -capable generator is perfect! I even measured the AC current with typical household loads all turned on (lights, refrigerator, basement freezer, computers, etc.) while running on this generator and I got a reading around 7 to 10 amps on each "hot" leg of the 240 volt 30 amp feed from the generator. Thus I still have a very comfortable "cushion" before I approach this generator's maximum power rating. I bought this generator about 2 years ago. I've only needed to use it a couple of times, but tonight I *needed* it! It started right up and ran continuously for about 7 hours straight. No problems. It provided all the power we needed for lights, refrigeration, TV, and computers all without a hiccup. I'm very pleased.
Worth the price
This generator is worth it's weight in gold. I live in New Jersey and I was hit hard by hurricane sandy. I was without power for ten days. I bought this generator and it powered my whole house and my neighbors house during the black out. I would highly recommend this product. The set up was easy and also the operation of this product. It also has a nice big gas tank for less fill ups and last up to 12 hours on one tank. All my neighbors want one.
A few quirks but overall happy with the product
Having an urgent need after a storm for replacing my generator ( that refused to start ), i went looking for a new one. The store had plenty of "off brands" or generic brands i was not comfortable with. I found a GP series 6500 tucked away under the rack. Knowing that Generac has made a reputation for home backup systems, i was willing to chance that they did some thinking before they put their portable generator to market. I liked the setup for the most part and it fired up with one pull (to my relief ). The Documentation was clear , giving plug requirements and a wonderful wiring diagram (thank you). Some things they could improve on is the adding of a Fuel Drain Valve, theft prevention security mounts, and supplying a cover with the unit.
I’m ready for the winter season
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my first generator. The delivery was fast and efficient. They even have a number you can call to find out your two hour window. It came packaged nicely in a box but it is very heavy. I love all of the features! It’s portable, comes with the plug in battery charger, foldable handle and push button start. I’m so happy I can finally feel at ease this winter season as we lose power frequently! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a generator!
Very high quality produce with lots of features
This unit is a very high quality product. You will be impressed right out of the box before you finish the simple assembly. Lots of features. Reminds you when maintenance needs performed. I especially like the four outlet cord that comes with it. This cord allows you to use both legs of the 240 volts instead of just one side. This gives you the ability to use the full rared output of the generator not just 1/2. The receptacles on the control panel also allow for this same usage. the automatic throttle control saves fuel as I usually do not need 8000 watts of power when dry camping with my RV. I just retired from 47 years in factory skilled trades maintenance and I am a skilled trades instructor at a local 2 year college and I am very impressed with this generator.
Super impressed
Was part of the "Bomb Cyclone" that hit the PNW on 11/19/24 and lost all power. After two days, we decided to invest in a generator knowing that this could happen again. The set-up was easy, the controls were well labeled, the starting process was explained with help from stickers located above the fuel line and choke lever (but make sure to read the manual first). The unit started with ease and ran for 4 days straight as we were out 6 days total. I was able to plug in the chest freezer, mini fridge, floor heater, lights, cable with TV, recliners, computer, and was also able to charge phones and flashlight batteries. This is my first generator ever and now wondering why we didn't purchase sooner. Would have made those first two days way more tolerabe! As a suggestion, even though the unit comes with a 20' heavy duty cord with 3-plug-in capabilities, I stronly suggest having a 50' or 100' equivalent heavy gauge (12g minimum suggested) to run from the unit into the house. If there was one thing I would try and change, it would be the noise output which I know accompanies all generators and just something you and the neighbors will have to deal with unless you devise something that dappens the noise without hindering the exhaust in any way. Overall, I'm super impressed and would recommend to family and friends without hesitation.
