GP6500/7680

I bought this portable generator because every time after a power outage I said I was going to get one and never did once the power came back on. Finally after the last outage I said that’s it I’m getting a generator… I reviewed a lot of different types and brands as I usually do when making any purchase. I did a lot of research on properly breaking in a portable generator To assure a long life for the generator. I do run it every 30 days for about 15 minutes or so to exercise it. It starts first or second pull every time. Although I have not used it in an outage situation as of yet I am sure that it will perform fantastic and flawlessly. I am a tradesman and I can tell just by looking at and touching the generator it is the highest quality. I love my new toy…

Great value

Bought this product as emergency back-up generator for home to provide power to refrigerator/freezer and well during outages. Excellent value and dependability. Will upgrade to home standby generator next year to power whole home and move this to garage for powering tools.

Lifesaver

We had been in a deep freeze and without power for two days when I happened to be in Lowe’s right when a truckload of Generac GP6500’s were being unloaded. They say timing is everything so I paid for one and loaded it into my truck. When I got it home and assembled the frame, everything seemed well built and sturdy. After all the prep work I was ready to fire it up and give my family some power, but unfortunately it wouldn’t stay running. After a lengthy call to a very caring customer service rep, we determined it had a faulty CO sensor right out of the box. If it wasn’t for that issue, I would give this a five star rating. Thanks to my engineering background, I was able to bypass the sensor and get power when we needed it the most. It’s a nice feature to protect dumb people who would try to run a generator in an enclosed space, but a better quality sensor is needed so it works when brand new. Most people do not have the background to get it working in an emergency and it would seem like a waste of money.

Easy to start!

Bought when power went out in early august. Ran 2 fridges and a chest freezer without a hiccup! Recently had a transfer switch set up so now I can power the whole house if I want to. Starts on first or second pull every time, and has enough power to not strain at all.

Powerful

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] What a powerful generator, it packs a lot of punch!! Great features like the electrical outlets, the size is compact and convenient and is actually a bit more quiet then I expected (it's not quiet, but definitely not the loudest I have heard) I think everyone would should have something like this for emergency purposes and recreational use. I would absolutely recommend this to all my friends and family.

Good Value

Bought this machine to use during a power failure. Found a great price on line, with free liftgate shipping. Started up first time right out of the box, so that was encouraging. Startup procedure is simple. Has sufficient capacity to run my well pump, fridge, microwave, lights, TV's and computer. Have only run it to check out the new transfer switch and panel, but it ran smoothly throughout. Kinda noisy, but won't be running it at night anyway. Lacks a power meter and the fuel level gauge is pretty cheesy.

a couple of suggestions

Putting the machine together in a cold garage was a real "thrill". None of your vendors offered this service. The cotter key for the wheels is a real challenge. There has to be a better, easier way to do this little task. Many naughty words were said. For accessories, why not casters for the front of the machine?? Something designed by you, designed to fit properly, would be a nice feature. Try lifting this thing to pull it out of a garage when you are 70, with a bad back. Everything works as it should, and the directions are easy to follow, and it started the first time.

hard to move

I give this 17500E a 5 star rating. The only con I have is the portability. I have to move the gen. around. I mounted a heavy duty caster with brake the second day I owned it , this totally changed the portability, I can move it around with one hand. Also I believe the handle needs to be adjustable so you don't have to do a shoulder lift to get it rolling.

Does the job

Have had the generator for a few weeks but held off running it until I had a manual transfer switch installed. That happened this week and so the time came to test the switch and the generator. As this was a first run the carb and tank were dry. In went the quart of oil, about a gallon of gas, I pressed the (electric) start button and it fired up without a hitch. I then flipped the well pump, furnace, fridge, a couple of lights and a chest freezer over and no-one in the house even noticed, and the generator wasn't even close to capacity. I hope I never need to use the unit in anger, but I'm happy that if we loose power, we will at least have the basics.
