I've owned various Bissell models as well as Rug Doctor. This model cleans well, but you spend as much time filling emptying the ridiculously small tank as you do cleaning the carpet. Waste tank seems to hold less than a half gallon. In normal cleaning mode, had to empty it three times in average size bedroom. Will use this for spot cleaning and Rug Doctor for full rooms.

I'm only going to give this 3 stars because I think they could still build a better shampooer. Overall, this does out perform our previous machine which, to be fair, was at least 10 years old and had been used quite a lot. So I would expect updated technology and product development to be farher along. But I find it hard to believe that we can send a man to the moon and even talk to him with intelligible conversation but we can get dirt extracted from 1/2 inch carpet. Even though it takes some dirt (as evidenced by the dirty water tank) it doesn't get ALL the dirt and even with chemical cleaners doesn't remove ALL stains. My biggest problem with this machine however is that once you've finished and even with the dirty water tank removed, you best not leave it sitting on any carpeted areas as it will leave dirty water spots whereever it sits. So either move it to a hard surface floor where it can be mopped or to an outside patio or balcony location when finished. Pros: Cost is reasonable. ~ Big rear wheels makes it easy to push. ~ Express clean option is a real bonus if your carpets are not too soiled or if you want to do the job more frequently and it saves on formula on the Express clean. ~ Express Clean allows for very quick drying. I don't know if this is normal or we got the one unit boxed up on some employee's generous day but we found sample bottles of formula of different kinds tucked in everywhere in the box so that we ended up with 8 total instead of the 3 mentioned in the description. Cons: Cord could be about another 5 feet longer. ~ Spot leakage as mentioned above. ~ Max Clean setting will go through the clean water/formula mixture in a hurry and carpet can take 15-20 hours to dry even after sucking up as much water as possible with repeated passes.

Maybe we got a defective unit, but upon first use of the upholstery cleaning attachment right out of the box, the machine was leaving a puddle of black/dark grey water. Luckily the machine was sitting on a hard floor so we could just wipe it up. If the machine was sitting on a carpet it would be leaving behind more stains than it would be cleaning!! I took pictures but there is no place to upload them here.

No Suction power what so ever, I returned.
