Time saving, great device!

My wife t thought I was crazy for buying a stand-by generator because we have a generator that I double hook up to run a few things in the house. Now since we have the generac she sees how handy it is and I don't have to go outside in the freezing cold or rain in order to "hook up" the other one!

An Infant and a sump pump

My power was going out on a monthly then turned into a weekly basis. I spent so much time on the phone with DTE to get daily or hourly credits for my service being down. This made life difficult with an infant and a sump pump. I invested in an 18KW whole home generator, this was the best home decision I have made. No more am I using the stove to heat in winter and window units plugged into a portable generator in the summer. With a sump pump you only have so much time to get the power to it before it fills and spills over into the basement. Oh and let me tell you, how difficult it is to set up a portable one when you have an infant that doesn't sit still. Generac, You are a life saver and I tell everyone!

Air filter issue on brand new 22KW generator

My new whole house generator was installed a month ago. After living with frequent power outage for years, we decided to invest in a new whole house generator to be able to stop rolling out the portable generator, extension cords, flashlights and worrying about food in refrigerator and freezer. All that concern was in the past now that we invested in our new generator. The generator performed properly on the power outage test after the installation though we have now discovered that the power outage test should have been run for a longer time period, The weekly 5 min tests performed since installation ran properly but on the first power outage, the generator would not operate properly to provide power for the house requiring immediate service. During this first power outage, the generator ran for 7-8 minutes and shut down. My installer came that evening, did some troubleshooting and eventually replaced the brand new Generac air filter with a new air filter (not Generac) as the generator would not run properly with the OEM supplied air filter. The engine would run ok for the first few minutes but then would begin to surge after 6-7 minutes and begin to exhaust what smelled like un-combusted natural gas. The exhaust pipe was getting hot enough to see the metal change temperature before the engine would shut down. The ecode was 5101 Engine speed. Its great that the design of the generator engine has the capability to protect itself and protect homeowners if the generator is exhausting un-combusted natural gas near your home. It is not great that Generac is selling generators with questionable quality air filters. Folks that I know who have owned Generac generators for years, all provide solid reports about the performance of the Generac brand. Keep the oil changed regularly with premium oil, use a premium oil filter, a premium air filter, verify oil level especially after or during extended power outages and check on the battery; by doing these things your generator will provide years of service for your home. Feedback is that Generac knows that there is a quality issue with their supplied air filter. If you purchased a new large whole house generator, mine is the 22KW model, check your air filter. If its a Generac brand air filter, model number 0J8478 with labeling indicating Flame Retardant, do yourself a favor and replace it with a premium air filter. This air filter may be or is starving the engine by not allowing sufficient air flow into the engine. My brand new generator with the factory installed air filter restricted air flow sufficiently to make the exhaust pipe hot enough to begin to glow and fortunately shut the engine down. If you have the above air filter, replace it with a quality air filter to help ensure your generator is operating properly. Will have to wait and experience the next months and years to see how my generator performs. Initial experience was not positive but Generac is known to be a good brand. Unfortunately, it seems that there is a quality control issue with this air filter. Hope that the remainder of the generator lives up to the solid Generac reputation.

Features are okay. I just need it to run.

The unit threw a rod in January of 2025 and threw 2 more rods in 2026 with a sum total of 115.5 hours of run time. I can see a unit going down once and being repaired, but twice for the same thing, even Generac should recognize there was and is a problem. Generac finally fixed it but after months of waiting. I would not recommend a Generac to my worst enemy because of Generac's reluctance to make it right.

Happy with everything, the Dealer, the product and the installation. However I feel like there could have been a better job restoring the landscape after digging a trench for the installation. They left it a muddy mess. Should have been packed down, raked, seeded with hay.

Portables are nice but whole house clearly better

We purchased a portable generator back in 1999 and used it several times throughout the years. But we are older now and the effort to maintain it and get it operational has become more challenging and so a whole-house "automatic" start generator made more sense.

Minor problem fixed by firmware update

We have only had it for a little over a month and so far, so good. We did have 2 "overcrank" reports that required resetting, but after installing the firmware, we no longer have that issue.

Peace of mind

I had this unit installed one year ago. The unit switched on twice for 2 minutes each time. I am very satisfied to have the unit available, especially during hurricane season.

Okay so far

This unit cost me almost 10K. I have only had to use it twice for an hour or so. So far it has operated above average. My main concern is whether or not it will run continuously for an extended period of time should my power be out for a day or so?

Buy generator, never loose power again 😬😬

Bought this generator approximately 2 years ago and have not experienced a power outage since!! Only hours on the generator are from the weekly 5 minute exercise and this has worked flawlessly.
