The customer service is great. Missing or warped pieces were replaced quickly and with no questions asked as to why. I found that it was very pleasant requesting additionally needed pieces.
With that being said, what comes to mind when you hear I had to request pieces? It means you will likely have children watching something being built for them in their backyard while they have to wait for replacement pieces before they can play.
1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BUILD THIS FOR YOUR CHILDREN IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO PUT IN THE EXTRA WORK. I WOULD NOT TRUST THIS KIT FROM THE BOX. DO NOT HIRE A STRANGER. A GOOD BUILDER WILL NEED MORE THAN IS INCLUDED IN THIS KIT TO MAKE IT SAFE FOR CHILDREN. THAT IS MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION.
2. I got the unit a couple weeks before Christmas and honestly assumed it would go up in a matter of a few days. I waited until a couple days before Christmas to start and that was mistake number one.
I am extremely handy and excellent at putting things like this together. You will need a third person to lay out steps in order if you plan to put this together quickly. If you do not have that person, plan an extra day for laying out the steps ahead of time. There is a load of material here. USE THE APP. IT IS NO JOKE. IT IS 1000x BETTER THAN THE BOOK.
3. The lumber itself is sub-par. It looks nice in the pictures. In-hand, the quality feels like the stuff that is too old to be sold at the store so they sweep it up in a huge discount. They then cut it to size and pre-stain this lumber. NOTE: I DID NOT SAY PRE-SEAL. They pre-stain, and if you call them every person reminds you to seal the wood as soon as you can. Which means you need to seal this before your kids can play on it. For some reason they believe this will spring their very fragile and dried lumber back to life for you and make it strong or something. You are only getting further damage protection. It is not rehydrating your dried wood back to life.
3.2 At least 5% of the lumber wanted to crack when driving screws or bolts into it. It was also warped in places that need to be very straight(like the ladder rails). I ended up buying new 2x4s from the store because the ones included were just not sound enough to put my kids on.
4. They made this for small children knowing it had to be built by grown men. It is absolutely not strong enough to hold the grown men who have to be on top to build it! I weigh around 200 pounds and my buddy who helped weighs more. Every single floor board on the bottom and top felt like it was cracking when building this. My friend rolled up on the top deck one time to assist with the roof and every single 1 x 3(Should have been 2 x 4s) joist cracked and it cracked the ends where they attach. My weight alone was cracking them. His finished the job.
I replaced every single floor joist with 2x4s by the end. I could not trust this construction. I added 2 x 4s where every structrual beam was located. You may have to get on this thing to get your child at some point. Do you really want it to break from helping your child one time? I can't afford that.
5. Plan on spending a couple extra hundred dollars for extra lumber and sealant.
6. The entire swing section is technically only held on by 2(TWO), read it 2!, bolts. There are a couple screws going into the portion at an upper point, but really 2 bolts hold that section to the main play house.
7. The inner swing is about 6 inches too close to the playset. If the child does not swing perfectly straight they are in danger of ramming their elbow into the playhouse.
8. There instructions insist you check every bolt of the playset each time your children want to play. Consider that information before you trust how much they trust the swingset they made.
Overall, I am very happy with this kit. I took three weeks to build it. I spent an extra $200 or more to make sure it was not flimsy where it counts. I own all the tools required to make this a better swingset and I own the extension ladder that is really required they do not tell you about.
I know my kids have enjoyed this tremendously but I would urge you not to buy one of these products from Backyard Discovery unless you REFER back TO POINT NUMBER ONE.
