It depends upon what plan you choose but it cameras monitors all motion and record activity that can be viewed later and all the motion sensors on windows works as expected.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We received the SimpliSafe outdoor camera package and were successfully able to add it to our current simply safe alarm system. The customer service agent who helped us was knowledgeable and polite. The cameras themselves have good quality both during the day and night, and so far have had a long battery life. We mounted the cameras a little higher than recommended, but still have a clear decent picture. We did not subscribe to video recording, however it is a service we have considered adding after seeing the good quality of video images during live playback.

This system certainly shows the fit and finish of company that has been refining their product over 15 years. I'd liken them to the Apple of alarm system products. My system in my old house was a DIY kit, but it was built from a legacy company that dominated in company owned, wired systems and moved into this space. It was a fine system, but you can tell this was built from the ground up with wireless and DIY in mind. This system package has a heavy focus on outdoor security with 2 outdoor cameras. We have always had 2 cameras on our home, whether it be one on each front corner or one in back, one in front. I will say that, if you can accommodate wired cameras, they will be faster and more reliable, but if you have no other choice but wireless, this is as good as they come and with a company like Simplisafe, you can count on support and firmware updates to work out any bugs. Just be sure you have a strong wireless signal where these will be placed. System setup is very simple and done using the keypad where you can identify where each piece is being located. They offer several monitoring options from self to full service and its competitive with what I was paying with my other DIY company. I've found that you can make up the cost of a DIY system in under 2 years versus a "free" system and high monitoring cost, so if you plan on having it long term, this is the way to go. A final added benefit of Simplisafe is that they offer a wide range of products so you don't have to mix and match brands to get everything you need, like I had to do on my previous system. You can add on a doorbell camera, a smart lock and a variety of smoke, carbon monoxide, water and temperature sensors. Very happy with the setup and functionality of this system and would recommend to friends and family. In fact, both of my brother-in-laws have Simplisafe systems and are happy with them too!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Just beware of the subscription. This security system was SO EASY and fun to install. Seriously, I have never seen so much care put into packaging. Setting it up was a delightful experience! I probably had the whole thing running in about 20 min (besides the cameras). The cameras took me an additional 10 min once I grabbed a drill (they say to hand screw it, but I was mounting it into wood, and it required pilot holes and that drill). Again, all-in-all really quick and painless to set up. So: if you emergency need a security system up and running RIGHT NOW, this is the system for you! It comes with a free 30 day subscription trial, so that will get you started. Once that free trial is over, the subscription cost is a little steep. I'm guessing that's where they make the bulk of their money. I can understand extra costs for active monitoring and calling the authorities, but the self-monitoring subscription also seemed a little excessively priced. II was very nervous about trying the system out and accidentally calling the authorities, so I just closed the app and reopened it without signing up (I can still sign up for the free trial in "manage monitoring" section). This might be a good place to test your system out and adjust the settings without fear of the police showing up. In the end, I opted to not use the 30 day free trial, and instead used the free version, which was extremely limited. The part that rubs me the wrong way is that the features are greatly reduced even when they shouldn't cost SimpliSafe anything more to use them. For example, with the free version, cameras will notify you if they find motion, but they will not record what is moving. In fact you cannot record at all, not even manually, you can only look in real time (like a baby monitor). This feature would not require extra programming or manpower, it is simply disabled unless you pay for a subscription. The subscription aspect is probably the most important part of this system. So definitely look into it to see if the cost and features work for you before you purchase. A few other things that might be relevant: I found the "home" and "away" settings a little confusing. The only thing I found you can do for "away" and "home" are set different enter-exit alarm delays. So if you're home and asleep, you want the alarm to sound immediately if someone breaks in, and if you're "away", you want to be able to open the door and have time to disable the alarm when you return. Both settings use the same alarm settings (volume, devices, ect., except for the timing). "Off" has no notifications, and there's no real way to allow notifications but no alarm if you're "home" and awake, and also have a super loud alarm if you're "away". Each camera, plus the base station, and the extra siren all sound an alarm if activated in the app. This is good to know for placement, i.e. if you want the alarms spread out evenly around the house, or if you want to disable that one camera alarm mounted by the baby's window. Also, each one can be adjusted to a different volume, and is very loud and annoying on the highest settings :) The camera's motion sensor allows you to exclude portions of the viewing window to be disabled (very nice if your neighbor's house is in the field of view, for example). The camera is super adjustable, but make sure you test the range of motion first. The mounting piece doesn't stick out very far, so the camera can only be tilted against the mounting wall so far. I messed up and had to drill two new holes for it after the angle was just not right. I actually ended up mounting my one camera inside, with a view of the entire front porch. The entry sensors are very easy to place, even on uneven molding. I used the sticky pieces right on there and it went up in seconds. (See photos for how off it looks but still works fine.) The base station has a light that you can disable (it was very annoying before I figured that out). IN SUMMARY, this system is very quick and easy to install, however without paying a monthly subscription, it may not be worthwhile depending on which features are important to you. If you don't mind the subscription fee, this was the most headache-free install experience of my life, I definitely recommend it if you can't deal with any additional shenanigans right now!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was able to set up the base and install the door monitors and outdoor cameras in 20 minutes. I had no problem connecting to my wi-fi and all the pieces of the system connected with no problem. I appreciate that the app walks you through the process. I'm always so worried that the technology will be the stumbling block for me, but it's easy enough for anyone to do. My favorite part of the system is how the outdoor cameras work. You only have to attach a small plastic piece with 2 small screws. The base has a magnet that the camera attaches to. This means no wires! Also, you can easily adjust the cameras to point just about anywhere. This week we have been traveling, so we pointed our front door camera down towards our welcome mat to alert us to any delivered packages. Then we have a neighbor come to pick them up for us. What an added bonus! When we return we will adjust them to give us a full view of the front of the house. I was worried about how easy it would be to arm and disarm the system. If it's not easy I know that it's not something I'm going to do on a daily basis and the entire system will eventually go unused. Because I can either push a button on the keypad on my way in or out of the house, or I can hit one button on my phone, it's easy enough for me to remember to do. After 2 weeks it's already part of my routine. We don't have pets, but we do have kids. We have found we also use the system to be able to keep watch over them when they're in the backyard or front yard. The cameras are clear and provide a good image. We're already planning to buy other parts of the system so we can monitor our entire house using one system and one app.

Once I looked through everything in the box and downloaded the app, it was not a problem to install the system. The app walked me right through everything and it was very self explanatory. The 30 day free trial is very nice to decide which "program" you want to you, plus they also give you a 3 day PRACTICE period so you aren't constantly accidently setting the alarm off & calling dispatch constantly because you aren't used to the system & don't know exactly what you're doing. I love this system. I is great quality, it is reliable so far, and I couldn't ask for a more user friendly system.

All you do is stick the sensors and cameras up on the wall or door/window, and link everything to the base station. I had been avoiding getting a security system due to the hassle, but with small kids in the house it has become increasingly important that we get one. Simplisafe wasn't intimidating or difficult to install at all, and so far the system is easy and intuitive to use each day.
