You have to raise the lid partially so the latch for the lock will allow you to turn the key to lock the box. Not mentioned in the instructions. Also, as some reviews point out, and shown in instructions, in the event the box is in a fire, the lid will melt shut and must be pried open. Sentry does state they will replace the box at no charge. My concern is if the lid melts shut, what is the impact to the latch and will it unlock so you can pry the lid open.

Received the fire safe and broke a key off on the lock Got the broken key out but now only have 1 key it’s a 3b3 and can not find where to purchase a new replacement key all sites including sentry do not list this as a key no. Seems like it is a discontinued item And no longer available

I am glad to have the safe cause I know my papers ect are well protected in case of a fire happened at my house. That’s why I wanted a safe such as the one I got. And plan to have it many years to come too. I like the idea it’s by a key you can get in other then a combination. Like that lots better too. But overall I do like it lots.

The safe certainly serves its intended purpose. However, it's heavy. Being heavy and slippery, it really needs handles to pick it up and carry it. Other than that, only minor issues. The label on the inside was peeling off upon arrival. I took it off and attached it to a piece of paper since it didn't have a prayer of staying on the inside cover and I didn't want it to fall off and get stuck to papers I put in the safe! The key lock isn't a lock, more like a latch. It's not for security, it's for fire safety so don't expect top security. The file folder rails are built in but the description isn't clear. It's a very good value if all you want is a fire safe.

This box is perfect for protecting some cash and important documents from fire. I haven't tested it, but am more confident now that my documents are in this box rather than a file drawer. Of course, this box is not theft proof as it can be carried out the door.

I wanted a "GO-TO" set up for important papers and the idea of a fire rating seemed sensible. We'll grab this if we ever have to evac for any reason and know the more important papers or records are more secure in this safe. I agree with some reviews that a handle would be nice and I don't find the key-lock setup to be very 'secure' looking but neither feature was important to me and I'm sure either or both improvments would drive the cost out of resonable range. This was less than $40. It's solid and seems well constucted. ** I purchased online with free ship-to-store but found it in stock while shopping a few days before my order was in. There were some on a pallet and after verifying the same item #, I was able to get it then and there for about $4 less. I was later credited for my online purchase.

I bought this file safe for a housewarming gift for my daughter's new house. It is large enough to keep her mortgage and other important papers safe. It could be improved by adding a sturdy handle as it is rather heavy and clumsy to handle. Other than that I am very satisfied.

I understand the need for the heavy weight to keep it fire resistant - but I have a fistula in my arm and was not able to bring it in the house after delivery. It was way too heavy for me. I just hope I do not have to try to run out of the house with it...but - I do understand the reason for the heavy weight. Thank you.

I was excited to have finally made a decision on a safe for our family. This one would have been perfect but when I received it it was really dirty like it had already been in a fire. To top that off the key didn't work. There was no way it would keep my stuff safe.

It does its job, is a little heavy, but would likely survive normal house fires that can be handled by fire dept. Altadena or Pacific Palisades type event and this will be gone with everything else. It keeps things together though should you need to grab and go.
