Friends of ours bought children's kayaks similar to these last year at Christmas for their two daughters. They had mentioned a few times how stable they were for the girls and how much they loved them. When browsing the online Walmart pages I noticed the Wave kayaks and decided to purchase two of them for my boys. We received them no problem and were shipped in plastic wrap to my door for FREE! Once we were able to get to the water with them I quickly realized that these things were going to be huge hits for the kids. My youngest son is very small (6 years old 34lbs) and his brother is 8 and is average size for his age. Both boys had absolutely no problem paddling and balancing on the kayaks. These are EXTREMELY stable compared to traditional kayaks. We went camping with our friends, and their daughters and our boys were all scooting around together on their kayaks. My oldest was able to jump off of his and climb back on fairly easily. Our friends kayaks are made by Pelican and I believe are called "solo" and if I was to choose based on looks, I think I would say that I prefer our friends kayaks although I do prefer the blue wave kayaks vs the yellow which is the color of the pelicans but that's is obviously just my opinion. I have seen the pelican kayaks priced slightly lower ($89) at the Canadian store with the big red triangle logo but only when they are on sale. I paid $94 for the wave. HOWEVER, I would buy the wave kayaks again if I had the choice. Simply because of the paddle. The pelicans come with no paddle and after purchasing the kayak you would have to buy one obviously, and they are not cheap! I looked at the price of them and for a decent paddle it was bordering on at least $50. The wave kayaks come with paddles and they are actually very good mid range kayak paddles. My buddy commented on how good the paddles were compared to his and he said his were $35 each I believe. They are built very sturdy out of aluminum and insulated with foam to make them float. The blades are plastic but are very sturdy. On another note, my wife is 5'4 and about 100-105 lbs and she found the kayaks very stable for her and she found she wasn't too big for them. She kayaked all week while camping with one of our two boys each time. I can see we will probably pick up another one so she can go with the boys together. In short, these youth kayaks are a FANTASTIC deal and are very durable. Not once did either son nor my wife ever come close to tipping the kayak. Same can be said for our friends kayaks as well but the wave kayaks are a much better bang for the buck due to the good quality paddles that come with them. You wont regret this purchase if you are trying to introduce your children to kayaking. Highly recommended!
