I typically have at least one ready-to-drink shake daily either to start my day or as my post-workout recovery drink. I wasn't familiar with OWYN Pro Elite Plant Protein shakes before I received this product to try. I wasn't familiar drawn to it being dairy-free and sugar-free as I'm lactose intolerant and trying to cut back on sugar intake. Plus. This shake has 2 grams more protein than my usual which matters since every gram counts towards my high daily goal! Reading the ingredients list, the shake uses both Stevia leaf and monk fruit sweetener. It also lists greens like kale, broccoli, and spinach. I chilled the shake before drinking it, making sure to shake it before I opened the container to pour it. It was chocolate flavor but had a slight gray tinge which was odd to me (the green blends, perhaps?). The scent wasn't off-putting and it didn't seem overly thick or creamy. The taste initially was fine - sweet with a subtle chocolate flavor. No chalkiness, and not grainy. However, the aftertaste was strong like an artificial sweetener (the Stevia, I'm guessing). Unfortunately, once that aftertaste set in, I had to chug the rest of the drink in order to finish it. It was filling but I really didn't like the taste/aftertaste taste. So while the extra protein and bring dairy-free are pluses, this won't be something I try again and won't be replacing my normal brand.

It came at perfect timing, as I had jaw surgery not too long ago and protein shakes are perfect for supplementing caloric needs. This option in particular is okay. I would say good for plant-based. The amount of protein is great. 200 calories is better than some other options. The taste however is not my favorite. Nor is the thickness. Does make for a good milkshake additive though!

Even though I try to eat less sugar overall I do not replace sugar with sweetener because I don't like the taste of them. I enjoy protein drinks when I'm on the go and don't have time for breakfast. My stomach was growling this morning and got this protein from my fridge and drank it on the road. Sadly, I didn't finish it because of the taste. If they sell some that is not zero sugar I will give it a try.
