They were fairly small and not deep. I’ll fill them in with a marker of something close in color. All the pieces and all the hardware were received. Don’t expect any extra screws or anything. I had just a couple of extra long bolts left over. Started on it at 11 am and we were done by 5 pm. This included opening the boxes and separating all the pieces to make they were all there. My son did most of the work, I only carried a few thing onto my deck. I suggest you have 2 people so it can be adjusted and square. We built the ends first and carried them onto the deck. She assured me that I would be contacted about delivery and assembly. Again, I was suspicious, but within a week, the pergola was delivered and the next week it was assembled. I will definitely purchase another item from Sam’s Club on line that needs to be delivered and assembled.

The two long, heavy boxes fit into my mini-van with the seats taken out. In Southern California, the climate is very sunny all year around, so I was concerned about the stain finish's long-term durability, even with a protective clear sealer applied, as is recommended. Clear sealers may waterproof the substrate, but will provide very little UV light protection. I wanted this to last for years with easy maintenance, so I painted all the pieces with three coats of high-grade house paint before assembling it. Took it home, and immediately applied waterproofing to all of the boards prior to assembly. The next day, after everything was dry I assembled the whole pergola on my back deck in about 4 hours, then moved it into position and used some different brackets to secure it down. It has transformed my back deck and we will be spending a lot more time outside because of it.

There were a couple of minor places on the posts where the wood had split, but no other damage. We were able to hide the split wood against a wall. It took about 6 hours to put together with 2 people and we were feeling the pain by the end of it. The instructions were a little hard to follow and the pieces were not clearly marked, and that is the reason for only 4 stars. All in all, it is a beautiful piece when fully assembled.

They give you a link to scan, you have to add an app to get it to work and it still is not much help. We went to Sam's and shot close up pictures and went from those. The wood is soft as cedar can be and there are several damaged areas from packing that we needed to touch up (paint stick or stain not included) The box wasn't damaged so it had to be during packing. Not all the holes line up so have a drill ready. They say it is a two person set up but that must be their guys with experience. The last steps are impossible for 2, even 4 people.
