Gear 360
I have had the 360 for a few days now, I am, but shouldn't be, amazed at the quality as all the Samsung products I own are made so well. This is no exception,it was easy to integrate with my S7 and I am loving finding new ways to film. I would say that it is so different than a normal camera you need to think in unusual ways of taking your shots. First its was strange not just hold it in front of me and shoot from the hip which you can, and is great in 180, but you need to think outside the box for 360 filming, and it has some practical issues here, as you can't just place it down in public and move away to clear the shot and leave it unattended. Its a bit strange on a pole with your arm pointing to the sky in the middle of a crowd. But this is not a normal camera its the future.
There is so much more to see
I have loved using every aspect of this camera and enjoy not only making videos and watching them back but also the live view through a samsung device. By using live view to get a complete view of the surrounding area you can notice things you never would have otherwise. Likewise, watching the video back later you are able to focus on a different area each time. One video becomes more like 20. The camera itself is lightweight (but still sturdy and well put together), quick to set up and can be used with most standard camera tripods and selfie sticks. Once you have done a few videos it is easy to transfer and upload them to where ever you like and the ability to drag the view in a video will be amusing to all your friends. Overall I love this camera and all the possibilities it offers, would even make the perfect gift for any gadget or camera enthusiast, or to bring home a complete experience of your travels. Why settle for a window view when you can see the world?
It's about the bigger picture..
I love adventure and don't shy away from the weather to seek it out, so this has been stuck to helmets and poles, UAV/drones and mounted on various tripods and vehicles. It's been everywhere with me, including up mountains and it's even been for a swim accidentally! Following me everywhere I go, it's small and easy to throw into a bag or pocket and using a standard camera screw thread, the mounting options are endless! Ok, so first impressions of the 360° video and camera quality are great. The 360° concept alone is amazing and matched with the Samsung VR helmet, it's even better! One of the things that impressed me most, however, was the software stabilisation that keeps the correct orientation and assists keeping the horizon level in post-production stitching (it won't matter if the camera is mounted upside down, for example). Mounted on a robust, extendable selfie pole, this camera was quick to whip out and snap that shot before anyone could realise what was going on (disable the great timer function, however). With the discreet tripod that comes with the Gear 360, the selfie stick allowed the camera to be at eye height when on a table getting everyone's reaction. It doesn't take long to work out the best camera/video settings, as it is pretty much point and shoot. Lighting can be an issue in the dark, or if one lens has a light shining on it and the other doesn't, which can cause a halo effect after the automatic stitching between the two. I post-process a lot of the footage in desktop programs for various reasons, but for general use, just point and shoot, stitch, edit and share! With the various cameras, video, time lapse and other functions, this could be all you need to capture that special event. I took many other action cameras and products with me on a recent ski trip, but didn't use any of them, opting for just the versatile Samsung Gear 360 only. The camera allows the use of just one of the lenses or both at the same time, and you can also remove the wraparound effect of the 360° footage, giving you a nice panoramic instead. The battery lasts a good hour or more on continuous recording mode, but with a 128GB memory card in it, you might want more than that, so I powered mine up continuously when the weather permitted. Being dust and splash proof, you will need to keep the side battery/memory card access door closed to retain that IP53 certification, but overall, it's a robust bit of kit that you should have in your pocket at all times!
Innovative camera
This is a serious step forward in the action camera market in many ways. The ability to film the full environment is brilliant and really adds to capturing moments and the responses of others on looking. Key successes with this are: 1. The easy access to features on the device without having to have phone on. 2. The seamless link up with my s7 and remote control through the 360 manager app. 3. The quality of photos in positive light. There are however some things that need to be improved in a second model, they are minor, but I would like to be able to shoot in low light so the addition of a double flash would be amazing. I would also think that if the product is aimed at the adventure crowd it should also be supplied with a bracket to attach to helmets, handlebars etc to keep it safe when out and about. This is necessary to compete with the other action camera brands out there. Overall though this is an excellent piece of kit and we'll worth the investment. Already captured some excellent 360 videos!
Dont buy it.
This camera works in two halfs which never line up correctly which makes taking videos hard. The quality or the images is like from the first mobile phone camera, very poor. Very close up ok. But i took it to a football game and couldnt see much on it. But the biggest thing is. You can view your 360 videos on any device apart from your Galaxy phone. It would even play on my Samsung smart tv. So i couldnt even show my mates.
Heavier than it looks!
My first impression was that it's heavier than it looks! It feels like a quality product in your hands and its performance does not disappoint. The menu/options can be accessed on the device itself but it's much easier to change these when linked up to your phone. The quality of the images and video it produces is outstanding due to the very high resolution of the 2 cameras. The downside to this is the file sizes are a bit on the large size and a big capacity memory card is required if recording a lot of videos in one go. That said, no memory card is supplied as standard. It's a bit on the expensive side considering no memory card is supplied but make no mistake, this is a professional piece of kit and the results produced justifies the price tag. I was lucky to have a 128GB memory card supplied free with mine as part of the #insidersgear360 campaign. However, the price of memory cards are falling all the time so this isn't really an issue and should not put you off your purchase. I already owned the Gear VR so this was an excellent companion which really brought the recorded video and images to life. The first outing for mine was down to London with the family. I was able to record some good memories which I'll be able to view in full 360 degree view for years to come. Much better than static pictures and standard video. The battery life I have to say is outstanding and I wasn't expecting it to be that good but it is! If you are a heavy user, it also has the advantage of a replaceable rechargeable battery. This enables you to carry a separate fully charged battery and swap them out if need be. Pros +Image/Video quality +Replaceable battery/battery life +Mini tripod supplied +Wrist strap that attaches to the mini tripod +Protection pouch to keep the device in (including mini tripod) for when you are out and about +Impressive PC editing software Cons -no memory card supplied -no charger supplied (must use your existing charger)
Great little gadget & great for videos
I was very excited to try the new Samsung Gear 360. In my every day life I am always using Facebook to share pictures and videos and hoped this device would make it a lot more interesting (and I do love trying out something different)! First experience unpacking the camera from the box was very good. All very easy to use (although I do miss just a basic instruction manual). I instantly was able to get it set up with my phone (and I am no technical wizard!) It was night time so I was interested to test it out with artificial light. In my opinion, sadly it's not at it's best in low light. I used my cats to test it out and found the small red light always seems to light them up. It's not so much of a problem, when moved away at distance but with the shape of the lens, I really wanted some nice rounded 'cat nose' photos! It's better in day light but still seems to be a niggling issue that irritates me using the camera. The photos are 'often' in focus. I find I have to keep it very still and sometimes by the time it takes to click the photo, my cats head has moved and I have a blurry photo! I am on holiday later this month and do feel this camera will come into it's own when we are looking at beautiful scenery in the right light. I feel it's definitely more of an outdoor - catch great photos whilst travelling - type camera, more than a 'photo people at a party' type camera in my opinion. It's very easy to use and to hold. I like the little tripod which makes it both easy to hold on to but also quite solid to set up and take a still photo- As I've said, I do feel the tripod will often be needed to get a great image. It's easy to upload onto social media - Photos are very quick. Videos take a little longer so best to keep them short as possible unless you want to wait 30 minutes for it to upload! It's designed very well and is so easy to use in live mode with my Samsung Galaxy S6. Overall, I am very pleased and feel I will probably keep the camera to take with me whilst we are travelling but I'm not sure how much use it will get in every day life. I also hope it's sturdy enough to be put in my bag. whilst away and hope the lens won't get scratched. Overall, I'd say a nice little gadget but can be a little difficult to get clear, non blurry images. I love the video element, which is absolutely perfect but needs a little more improvement on the photo side. The 'red light' on the front of the camera is my greatest irritation on using it! 5/5 for video and 3.5/5 for photos. It's a handy tool but will not be replacing my normal camera.
Nearly Top Gear
Taken ownership of the Gear 360 in December and had lots of play time before this review. First impressions:- A good quality feel, nice weight and texture. Has an almost metal body feel to it and a great anti-smear coating to the lenses. Nice extras in the box, with a posing pouch to keep it safe in, a leather strap for ..... well no idea and a charging cord (but no charging plug) The Good:- Very easy to use and hook up to your phone (Samsung S7 edge) Sturdy tripod Small and compact for a pocket Simple to use without your phone Great 360 pictures Can be placed on any type of tripod The Bad:- Tripod can be seen on the bottom of 360 pictures Not tough enough to be used as a 'go pro' type action cam Slow to transfer pictures from device to phone 360 stitching can be a little odd Cant have full access on apps with other devices Verdict:- Not a bad effort from Samsung, the device has its minor flaws but overall worth the purchase. WOW friends with those stunning 360 pictures ..... just like me ! #insidersgear360
A great 360 camera that's got some great features.
This is a great 360 camera & the more you experiment with it, the more it amazes. The 360 view is great as is the 180. Timelapse is good but is only for video so you end up with a couple of minutes of speeded up video. It would be nice to take still images as well and remember to start with a full battery! There's a nice feature where you can use Wi-Fi direct to connect the camera to your phone & add your own street view images.
Great camera quality
The 2 cameras are amazing in quality. Pictures and videos are very clear and not pixelated, the design is a little strange but serves its purpose. When using the Gear 360, there are many features that are useful which can be easily accessed from your phone using the companion app. Overall I think it is an amazing product however I believe it is slightly over priced.
