I didn't try without, but I'm sure that you can use without any shaving cream and it'll work just fine with water. Although the stand comes in handy, I didn't really use it.

It feels premium and substantial. The stand provided is an added bonus. The shave was close and smooth, gliding effortlessly across my skin with no irritation, or pulling of hair. Hours after shaving, I did not notice any ingrown hairs or irritation bumps. It worked especially well in different places like the neck. I noticed I could go longer between shaves than usual. Even after three uses, the blade still felt sharp. I did find the circular head movement(as shown on the box) to be unnecessary, as I didn't experience that movement at all while shaving. It's hard to tell if the exfoliating bar actually exfoliates. Overall, I prefer this razor to my usual Harry's, though the shave didn't feel much different from other Gillette models and seems to have some unnecessary design functions.

I like to shave daily with this razor more compared to my other razor I had been using. This one has a good grip handle allowing me to get close in to shaving. It's sophistication and high quality look and feel is nice. It looks great sitting on my bathroom vanity sink too!

The back of the razor is very open spaced which is a big win because it is so much easier to clean out after a shave. I use creams to shave and they usually gunk up razors every stroke. What goes in this comes right back out. It swivels at the cartridge to help get a more equal shave. I shave my head with a razor so I really appreciate this feature. Thats also where the release slide is though, so sometimes it does get in the way. As far as the exfoliation bar goes, I'm not really able to tell a difference. It doesn't exfoliate ingrown hairs as you shave. But I dont have to double back on the same spots with this razor. It is still a high quality razor.
