We own two of these great icemakers!

These are great icemakers!!! We have found, the hard way, that the quality of water you put through the system is important. If you have hard water in your area you must use some type of water filtering system to filter out the calcium and magnesium. The scale inhibiting filter sent with the icemaker is not enough. I use a Zero Water filter system because it specifically filters hard water. You will never have a problem. Love the little ice nuggets!!!

Water quality is an important factor when using the Opal icemaker. The best water you can use is distilled. Using distilled will lengthen the time between sanitizing and descaling cycles.

Awful Noise.

We are in our third 2.0 ice maker and they make an awful “LOUD!!!” Noise that it forces us to get up out of bed to turn it off. I used the App this time but I’m half asleep trying to Find the app I need to turn the thing off so it’s no better than getting up to do it. Super disappointed that GE has done NOTHING to fix this problem.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

Opal Ice 2.0 - noisier than expected

[Employee of ge_appliances] The quality of the ice is good and as advertised. Noise is the biggest complaint while making ice. It is noisier than expected for a device sitting on a countertop. Seems to be primarily compressor noise. Sometimes I can hear it in the next room. Capacity is reasonable and adequate for my general use - as expected.

Third one & broken like the other two

This is the third GE Profile nugget ice maker I have purchased over the last 10 years. It won't work now because it says to add water when it's already there. There has been an issue with each GE Profile nugget I have purchased. I don't know why I keep spending the money but I love the ice it makes!

Best Ice ever!

I received this ice maker as a Christmas gift from my son and daughter best Christmas gift ever. I am always having to buy ice from grocery store or gas station and buy the time you get home it is already melting. This causes it to refreeze and then you have to break it up to use it. I love how easy it is to fill glasses with the enclosed scoop. It looks nice sitting on counter. The easy to fill side tank makes a endless supply of yummy nugget ice always accessible. Also this ice makes for a good ice pack for a injury or boo boo for kids. Since the nuggets are small and not heavy and sharp like typical ice cubes. I would definitely recommend this ice maker to anyone who uses ice daily. I also ordered the magnetic scoop holder accessory it attaches to the side of the ice maker making it even more streamlined.

The Opal is the perfect gift! The fresh nugget ice makes any beverage taste better. With this model having the side tank, it can produce 3 times more ice so you don't have to refill the water as often. Make sure you download our SmartHQ app to take advantage of your Opal's smart benefits like monitoring the Opal's status and scheduling fresh ice. Plus, you can receive automatic software updates that includes the latest features and access voice control capabilities through Alexa and Google.

Loud

Noise level and the instructions are not specific to the machine. 1. I followed the online instructions to connect to WiFi. It kept asking for certain numbers on the back of the machine , that were not there. After researching online and reading comments from the community figured it out. 2 the cleaning button continues to blink. The instructions indicate a 55 min descaling process .. never happened. This is too loud and too much work for ice cubes. Sending it back

They would be glad to assist with any issues related to connectivity. The manual also has information about care and cleaning, including descaling, starting on page 7. If the unit won’t proceed through the descaling process, or is still indicating it needs to be descaled after you complete that process, we recommend disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting; this resets it and can often solve an issue. We have information about what sounds you may hear at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276 Your feedback regarding your experience will be shared with our product team, and we’ll also be reaching out over email to discuss your situation further. 2 failed howling Opals in under 2 months

It was amazing, for the 9 days it worked. I’ve already sent information to GE although to date they haven’t responded. We bought the regular/original Opal on Black Friday as an early Christmas gift. Plugged it in, had great ice for 2 weeks and then it started making a loud howling noise and quit making ice. We returned it, and then bought the 2.0. For 9 days it was amazing but again began making a loud howling noise and then stopped working all together. We have now returned it as well after finding tons of reviews online from consumers experiencing the issues with new Opal Nugget Ice makers. For the price, it’s pretty sad. I would recommend looking elsewhere at this point until they address this known issue.

Noise

We have the GE Opal ice maker. Have loved it up till now. We clean it like the directions say and with the descaling powder recommended by GE. Now when it turns on to make ice it is loud and makes a very loud hum/howl noise. We have to turn it back off and not make ice as it is so loud and will not stop. Water tanks are full hose lines are clean and free of any crimps in them. We are at a loss with this as it is just over a year old for spending $500 on it!

Descale your appliance choice, not THIS icemaker.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The product itself may surprise me but the initial cleaning is the tank was not as detailed with illustrations as much as I think it should. I'm a rather intelligent lady with a college background as well as I feel vetted in having common knowledge and street smarts. But I will say this instruction manual could use some major updates. It made me have to stop and restart the steps over numerous times. It also doesn't tell you that you have to confirm after each cleaning cycle that I want to continue with the cleaning quarters it goes through. The cleaning mode should be a touch and go system instead of causing the user to have to fully dedicate their time standing at the appliance and assist in the cleaning process.

Fantastic Ice Machine

This is the best countertop ice maker the whole family loves the crushed ice. I got the floater and hooked up the water line running to the fridge. Now I don’t ever have to worry about refilling the water. Love this machine makes enough ice for our family of four without worrying about running out.
