We wanted to upgrade our ice machine and considered this vs. a built in. Our old ice machine was a IKICH (Amazon's choice). This is significant upgrade from that or any other countertop ice maker I've seen -- it looks like a real kitchen appliance. Built solid, nice finish. Makes great ice quickly -- the good ice! The reservoir holds amble water. I saw others who talked about noise -- but for us, this version is much quieter than my old countertop ice machine. Go for it. I love the 2nd year free warranty from the GE Appliances website.

This thing is really amazing. You have to make sure you follow cleaning instructions and make sure you clean the fan and it will last forever. I really wish it had a hard plumb option without having to modify the side tank. I really hope GE gets that in the works!

Love it! Best ice ever. This is my second machine. The machine was not the problem it was our location. We are a military family and we moved to NM. The water is hard, extremely hard. So it ruined my first machine that was fine. I had the first one for 5 years. Did not look at other brands I knew I wanted the same brand.

This is my second Opal. We love the ice but the machine is very noisy and both only last about 2 years before they start to slow down on the ice making. They get hot and start to get very finicky. I descale once a month and keep it in a well ventilated area. I will continue to buy the Opal because we love the ice. The next one I will be buying the extended warranty for sure!!!!!

I love my new opal 2.0. I had the previous version which did stop working about a year and a half after I got it, but luckily I had the full replacement insurance which covered most of the cost of the opal 2.0. I would say it is always worth it to get the extra insurance on these as no matter how well you treat them, they are only made to last about a year of continuous use. Using only distilled water will extend the life as long as possible but in the end they all stop working in my experience, though the opal did last the longest of any model I ever had. I have had Oster, Newaire, Mueller, and Solon, plus a few names I never heard of from china and the opal worked longer than all of them. It also has a great design and a gallon side tank so requires less refilling than most other countertop machines.

Finally, I can chew ice without destroying my teeth. Chewing crushed ice or cubes (!) ruins enamel and will make your dentist yell at you. These ice puffs are designed for safely chewing. A godsend for those of us with an ice chewing habit. Highly recommended.

I have coveted this ice maker for some time. I LOVE chewable ice but I was hesitant to spend so much money on myself. Well, I’m worth it! Set up was quick and cleaning isn’t difficult or time consuming. There are 2 things that I wish were in the instruction manual. 1) there is no mention of the optional filter. I buy them from Amazon. I’ve used both the GE brand and the Glacier Bay brand. They seem to both last about 2 months. 2) I battled to set up the WiFi. I foolishly guessed I should use the Opal app but I eventually learned from reading a blog about something else that the Opal app is only for blue tooth. The correct app is called SmartHQ. The app is helpful as you can set a schedule and it tells you when the ice maker needs cleaning. I set mine up in my laundry room near the sink for ease of draining during cleaning, but you could easily use a bucket of it weren’t near a sink. It is a bit heavy to move. One thing I’m not clear on is the light, nothing in the manual describes the purpose for the light (off/dim/on) but I’ve read the blue light helps keep it clean. I have no idea if this is true or not??? As for noise, it really isn’t noisy. It makes some noise when making ice but I can’t hear it from the kitchen which is the room next door. Long story short, I love it.

This machine although it is a little loud will make all the ice you need. We had a margarita night at our house and really put this thing to the test emptying it several times and it just kept chugging away making ice. Very good looking machine. Not a lot of water draining for us.

this was giving to me as a gift and i could not wait to get it up and running. i absolutely love ice in all my drinks lots of ice. the set up look like a bunch of stuff but was really very easy started making ice as it said and within 30 min had my first glass of wonderful ice water. have been wanting one of these machines and i could not be happier. it’s very quiet really don’t even know it’s running. cats have enjoyed checking it out when the ice falls. very very pleased. a lil pricey but will highly recommend this to everyone

I have wanted one of these for the longest time and my husband treated me this Christmas. This ice maker has been a present for the entire family. It can crank out ice in no time and we never run out. Set up was very easy. I was very surprised to find out that even though it is not refrigerated, there is still ice in the morning after being turned off over night. It also runs pretty quiet and the hum of the machine has just become another normal sound in our house. It has 100% lived up to what was advertised as far as I am concerned.
