Good price for this item
Great product
I loved my Opal. Shame the motor seized after 2 years of faithful service. It made a horrible noise after only 18 months. There isn't any way to lubricate the inner working. We did our due diligence and cleaned it regularly, as recommended by manufacturer. For the price, I wouldn't buy it again. Lovely, until it wasn't.
We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for
mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual
for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using
vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well.
It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis
water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of
minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water
reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part
P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the
solidification of scale.
It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and
above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.
Don't waste your money
The worst by ice machine ever this is our second one on warranty and they will give you the runaround to not replace it. I did all their troubleshooting that they recommended running vinegar through it and it's still not working, but it's still my fault.

Junk!
DO NOT BUY THIS!!! we bought it brand new from Sam's mother day 2026 - the first unit we cleaned and descaled like clockwork 3x in the 2 mos since we bought it then beginning of july it started making very loud grinding sounds so we called GE customer service and the lady was of ZERO help over the phone and very rude. Eventually they agreed to send us a new one. Once we got our new one about a month later, it is now 5 weeks later and same issue is happening again! DO not waste your money on this item it doesn't last and they only send you one replacement so we are out our $300 at this point.

Horrible squeal since day 1
I love the ice it makes, but this ice maker makes a horrible squealing sound literally since we turned it on to start using it. We followed the directions to set it up, ran the cleaning cycle, gave it several days to work itself out, but it is not getting better. We need to return it and figure out something else.

Third time return
This is the third time I have returned this item and none of them have ever stopped making a horrible loud noise. I’ve tried unplugging, cleaning and all of the above but nothing seems to work. Waste of time and money I thought I was going to have an excellent product thinking GE was a very good brand but this time I’m very disappointed!

Look at this machine specially for parties
Love this machine however its ice collection area door doesn’t stay open as it doesn’t have any stabilizers to hold it open . Otherwise the unit is quiet and makes plenty of ice … the side tank makes it very convenient to use. You can see when you need more water . Enjoy!!!😊
Do not recommend
We have had this machine for a year and it is more of a hassle than it is worth. The ice is great, but the frequency of the loud screeching and incessant cleaning routine is too much. The sounds from and work required for this machine do not meet the price point.
We'd like to address the issue you're having with sound, and provide information regarding maintenance. We suggest only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles; you can view the manual on our GE Appliances website by looking up the model number, going to the product's page, and viewing the 'Owner Support' section. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. Please ensure that there’s at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow. If you continue to have an issue, please disconnect the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting, to reset it. If you're still having an issue with sound afterward, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, or X with your contact information, complete model/serial numbers, and a copy of this review so that we can review the information and get back with you quickly.
Good till it’s not.
It was good till it wasn’t. Had it now for about 4 months. Bi-weekly cleanings and follow the instructions to the letter. Suddenly the compressor and the pump stop working. Still trying to exchange but it’s like jump through a million hoops since I don’t have the original box. Who keeps a box for 4 months? You see the digital receipt, what’s the issue here? I’d be happy to change the review if someone would follow through on the warranty and exchange this for one that works. Like I said, it was good till it wasn’t.
