Great ice!! Wifi wonderful upgrade.

The product makes great ice and GE has improved the product since the original. The "sonic" or nugget ice is perfect. The upgrade to WIFI is a great improvement from the original. The product can be scheduled and controlled through an app from anywhere in the world. GE includes the external water fill unit with the product. This allows you to remove the water container and fill the container from the sink without filling a pitcher and carrying water to the ice maker. Since this unit was just upgraded in July 2020, almost all the reviews are from the original Opal. The Opal 2.0 solves almost all the problems with the original unit. The auger system does produce a steady low level machine noise when making ice. Once the ice bin is full, the unit is dead quiet. The ice maker makes about one pound of ice per hour and holds about three pounds of ice. This would be suitable for small gatherings.

Add Water

I was excited about this purchase but nervous at the same time. I'm very frustrated and disappointed to have spent so much money and to keep having to troubleshoot so early in the purchase. It's constantly saying “Add Water” when the water tank is completely full.

piece of junk. under designed and unreliable.

I purchased in 2020. 1st machine ran for a few months and then became very intermittent and then quit. I sanitized regularly, used good RO water. My only recourse was to get a refurbished replacement. It took 10 weeks through their warranty provider. After 24 hours, it developed a bad leak. Another 10 weeks to get that replacement and the 3rd machine does not pump water so that it can make ice. Unbelievable. There is absolutely no way there are hundreds of positive reviews for this piece of junk. 3 machines. 3 different issues. Almost a statistical impossibility that this could occur with a well designed, well made appliance. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this product regardless of how tempting the opal ice is. The only thing worse than the machine is the warranty support from the 3rd party that handles this product for GE. I know why they farmed this out!!

Not recommended for daily use

My husband loves the ice from this machine but I absolutely hate this machine. If you use it daily 1) it cycles each time you get ice 2) it's loud and 3) you have to clean it every two weeks. The cleanings take about an hour because of the repeated rinsing to make sure there's no remaining bleach. A few days before the “cleaning” light comes on, the machine makes a loud grinding noise throughout the day. The noise stops after the cleaning but returns about two weeks later. I do not recommend this product if you want to use it daily.

Family love this unit, couple trade off's though

Well I'll start off my saying my wife and 6 year old are obsessed with chewing ice. My kitchen floor is constantly wet due to the fact my GE fridge spits out the ice at million miles per hour so it's hard not catching all of it. With this I knew we'd fix that problem and also the fear of my kid busting a tooth on harder ice. There is a couple other options when it comes to nugget ice but it's still limited. This obviously is probably the most expensive one but between all my Kitchen appliances being GE cafe, I wanted to keep it universal. Plus the fact this one is shorter then other ones so it fits under the standard cabinet height. As far as function, it does what it's meant to do. Add water and make ice. There is a reservoir inside that you fill with water and also the external one. It's highly recommended filling both options however pro tip, fill the external tank prior to the internal tank. If you do the internal first, it fills up the external base for the external tank And when you side the tank in, water shoots out everywhere. Ice quality I feel is good, it's soft and crunchy at the same time and absorbs the liquids nicely when used in drinks. Nuggets do not stick together so I feels that's also a good plus. My only two issues are A)The noise, it can be loud and louder than I was hoping it would be. For some reason it's has a good vibration noise if I don't have the external tank installed down the side. My kitchen is separated from the house as far as not being a open floor plan so thank goodness for that, I still can hear it from the next room over. It is louder than my GE dishwasher to give you a idea. B) Water.... it does use a lot of water, both tanks of water will be used in a couple days with minor use. It's an expected problem but I don't know if it melts quicker than expected but then again it reuses the melted ice. If you're able to attached an actual water line, go that route!

Great if it works, but not worth the cost

After 10.5 months, consistent issues started—it wouldn't produce ice, received add water errors. We have watched endless tutorials for trouble shooting, only ever used distilled water in it, and ran the clean and disinfect cycles monthly (every 3-4 weeks) as directed by the manual. Not worth the money

GE Opal Ice Machine

We have tried 6 GE Opal ice machines and they have all quit around one year. The one we have now just quit at 7 months!! We kept trying in hopes they improved the machines but obviously that is not the case. Very frustrated and will not be buying anymore!!

Great countertop ice maker

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] First impression: This unit is sleek and modern looking. It would look great in any kitchen. It is big! It turns out our upper cabinets were installed lower than is standard so it didn't fit in the original spot I had in mind but can sit on a freestanding cabinet we had. It is heavy so initially moving it to drain into the sink during sanitizing was sort of a pain. The ice it makes is awesome. I love nugget Ice! It cools down drinks fast and it is nice to eat. It made ice pretty quickly though it did start out wet and slushy at the start of the cycle. Read your manual carefully at the initial setup. I accidentally attached the wrong hose to the side tank and made a huge leak (all my fault—this was CLEARLY labeled and emphasized in the directions). I think the sanitizing process will seem easy now that I've done it once but I felt a little overwhelmed the first time through. Operation is easy and straightforward. Overall, I highly recommend this unit if you are in the market for a countertop ice maker!

Game Changer in our household

My wife & I absolutely love this product. We have nothing negative to say about it . We have a fairly new LG frig thats amazing , but the ice maker sucks...especially in the summer time or if guests are over . So we did some research and made the investment to get this amazing ice maker . It looks great on the counter & is always full of ice as long as your adding water to the tank every other day.

Great ice, but totally unreliable

First off, I love the ice and I love this ice maker … when it's working. Unfortunately, I've had four (yes, FOUR) of these machines crap out on me within a couple of years. The last three have stopped making ice and displayed the “add water” message, even when full of water. Yes, I tried futzing with it 100 times, turned on clean mode, stuck my finger on the intake to prime the pump, drained it, refilled it … in all cases, this worked for a couple weeks but eventually it stopped making ice completely. So disappointing, because having this ice around makes everything better. Please work out the bugs and give me a machine that lasts more than a few months.
