Middle of the road

We love the ice that it produces, but not sure of a few discomfort things for the ice and price. We find it pretty noisy. Its located in our kitchen (open type floor plan) and it can be heard though out the open area. It also make squeaking noises at times that sound like it needs to be oiled. When getting the ice out of the ice bucket, water leaks down the front of the unit into the drip tray. Not sure how the stainless will hold up over time and the tray constantly has water in it. We are a family of 5 and use a good bit of ice throughout the day.

Purchasing Second Opal Ice Maker

Currently I own an Opal Ice Maker Model#OPAL01GEPKT. I believe we bought it in early 2019. The machine has always performed to my expectations. There were times in the beginning that I had issues but read the manual and the GE online website for additional tips. #1 Clean the machine with 1 teaspoon bleach mixed with 5 cups of water and rinse at least three times every seven days. It is not a big deal and have learned to add it to our kitchen clean up after dinner. #2 Every two months I would run white vinegar through the cleaning cycle and keep it in the machine for at least 18 hours then drain and run clean water through at least 3 times. This sound like a pain but understand what water can do to the system even though we use distilled water only. Calcium still has a way of getting in the system. #3 Keep vents open and un obstructed on both sides allowing for the coil to suck in air for cooling similar to what an air conditioner return air does in your house. #4 I found it very helpful to vacuum the vent which houses the coil and sometimes I would spray a can of condensed air into the vent to keep the coils clear. As of this week, we started hearing a loud rattling. After inspecting the machine I realized it was the fan motor that cools the coil. It eventually stopped working. Since the machine is close to 4 years old I decided rather than try to fix it if even possible due to age, we purchased a new model. I am in real estate management and understand the intricacies to refrigerated equipment and know that most sealed systems cannot be fixed. We feel that we got our money's worth out of the ice maker and was satisfied enough to purchase a new one. However with anything that has water running through it, you still have to perform maintenance. I hope this review will help others in deciding if the Opal Ice Maker is worth the purchase which we feel it is.

The Holy Grail of Ice

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I would drive to certain gas stations just so I could get nugget ice. Now I don't have to! I can have it at home anytime I want. This ice machine does take up a fair amount of counter space but it is so worth it! The water reservoir holds a decent amount of water, ensuring I can keep my ice machine going throughout the day even on the hottest days making fresh ice. The large holding tub is perfect for holding large amounts of ice. So far, we have not run out of ice. The machine can keep up with myself and my family. I am extremely pleased with this ice maker and so happy we have it. It's easy to use, makes the best ice quickly and replenishes fast as well.

It's Alright

Produces ice, but runs almost 24hrs a day and sounds just a bit quieter than an ice cream maker. Our kitchen is never quiet anymore. Ice is inconsistently melted/refrozen in chunks or expected pellet ice. And 3 days after I plugged it in, the app is told me it needs to be descaled. Family likes the pellet ice, but I expected a lot more given the price.

Deafeningly loud from the first week.

My Opal 1.0 was on its very last leg after almost two years so I decided to upgrade to the 2.0 I hoped would have less problems. Boy was I wrong, as soon as I threw the massive box away it started screeching so loud my toddlers complain. I'll have to unplug it if anyone comes over as it's absolutely embarrassing and loud enough you can barely talk over. GE was absolutely zero help when I opened a case within 30 days of purchase. Starting to wonder if picking up a bag or two a week of nugget ice would be easier at this point. I absolutely love the ice, but this ice maker is a very expensive piece of garbage.

She don't want flowers she wants an ice maker

Literally the best ice maker ever! I recommend to all! Perfect for all your summer drinks! My iced coffees taste ten times better with this ice! Pregnancy ice cravings? This is perfect! Trust me! So easy set up and clean up! One thing I do recommend is to use distilled water.

Best Ice Ever!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The GE Profile™ Opal™ 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker makes the best ice. The nuggets are a cylinder, oblong shape (like the type found in commercial establishments)! The unit can support up to 24 pounds of ice daily and is easily refilled with water. The ice itself tastes clean and fresh thanks to the onboard filter. I am an ice chewer and simply adore this unit. My only complaint is the app; it never did sync with the unit.

GE should cover the problem

I would love to be compensated for my first machine. Didn't even last two years and the motor quit. Always cleaned it. Always changed the filter. I bought another one because of how well it kept ice and how well it made ice. I bought the warranty this time. I just wish GE would make it right. A 700 dollar machine shouldn't quit in less than two years. Randy R. Arkansas

Terrible experience

I read all the reviews and this seemed to be the one to buy. Received the machine, followed all the start up instructions. Even watched videos. Worked amazingly for first 24 hours. Then it started making a terrible squealing noise. Tried to reset and defrost. Worked fine for an hour and did the same thing. Figured I got a lemon. Returned and replaced. Second machine did the exact same thing in the same time frame. So disappointed. Do not recommend.

Noisy, But it Gets the Job Done

I have been really enjoying the ice maker. Two things annoy me… the noise and the wifi connection. You can hear a constant buzz when making ice and every week or so when using the app it loses its connection from the cloud and you have to remove it and re-register it. It's still better than running to Chic-Fil-A or Sonic for good ice.
