The Best Purchase I’ve Made for My Kitchen

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you love nugget ice, this machine is a dream. The GE Profile Opal 2.0 delivers perfect, soft, chewable nugget ice every single time. It looks sleek, feels well-built, and runs way quieter and smoother than I expected. The side tank is super convenient, the ice production is fast, and it keeps up easily with a busy household. From cold drinks to smoothies to daily water, this elevated everything. Easily one of my favorite appliances. Highly recommend without hesitation.

Loud

Noise level and the instructions are not specific to the machine. 1. I followed the online instructions to connect to WiFi. It kept asking for certain numbers on the back of the machine , that were not there. After researching online and reading comments from the community figured it out. 2 the cleaning button continues to blink. The instructions indicate a 55 min descaling process .. never happened. This is too loud and too much work for ice cubes. Sending it back

We’re sorry to hear you’ve had multiple issues with your Opal, and we’d like to assist. Information about connecting to WiFi can be viewed on page 14 of the manual, linked here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. They would be glad to assist with any issues related to connectivity. The manual also has information about care and cleaning, including descaling, starting on page 7. If the unit won’t proceed through the descaling process, or is still indicating it needs to be descaled after you complete that process, we recommend disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting; this resets it and can often solve an issue. We have information about what sounds you may hear at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276 Your feedback regarding your experience will be shared with our product team, and we’ll also be reaching out over email to discuss your situation further. We own two of these great icemakers!

These are great icemakers!!! We have found, the hard way, that the quality of water you put through the system is important. If you have hard water in your area you must use some type of water filtering system to filter out the calcium and magnesium. The scale inhibiting filter sent with the icemaker is not enough. I use a Zero Water filter system because it specifically filters hard water. You will never have a problem. Love the little ice nuggets!!!

Water quality is an important factor when using the Opal icemaker. The best water you can use is distilled. Using distilled will lengthen the time between sanitizing and descaling cycles.

2 failed howling Opals in under 2 months

It was amazing, for the 9 days it worked. I’ve already sent information to GE although to date they haven’t responded. We bought the regular/original Opal on Black Friday as an early Christmas gift. Plugged it in, had great ice for 2 weeks and then it started making a loud howling noise and quit making ice. We returned it, and then bought the 2.0. For 9 days it was amazing but again began making a loud howling noise and then stopped working all together. We have now returned it as well after finding tons of reviews online from consumers experiencing the issues with new Opal Nugget Ice makers. For the price, it’s pretty sad. I would recommend looking elsewhere at this point until they address this known issue.

Fantastic Ice Machine

This is the best countertop ice maker the whole family loves the crushed ice. I got the floater and hooked up the water line running to the fridge. Now I don’t ever have to worry about refilling the water. Love this machine makes enough ice for our family of four without worrying about running out.

Squeaks and squeals

Fresh out of box. After 1 tank it starts make noise like scaled up. Needs to defrost goes thru at tank and does it again. Called GE and blamed on hard water. Tried distilled waters that is GE recommends and it does the same. They have no resolution. Will be returning if continues.

Noise

We have the GE Opal ice maker. Have loved it up till now. We clean it like the directions say and with the descaling powder recommended by GE. Now when it turns on to make ice it is loud and makes a very loud hum/howl noise. We have to turn it back off and not make ice as it is so loud and will not stop. Water tanks are full hose lines are clean and free of any crimps in them. We are at a loss with this as it is just over a year old for spending $500 on it!

We'd like to help out with the sounds you are noticing. We recommend performing a full clean and descale cycle for your unit. You can find instructions on pages 7 through 9 in the user manual here: https://products-salsify.geappliances.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. For the best performance, we recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. We also recommend that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit. Furthermore, one of our agents will be reaching out to collect more information and offer assistance. Please respond at your earliest opportunity.

Never ending defrost

I would like to give it more than one star because I was really hoping it would work. I had the ice machine for less than three days. It did not get put together until the second day it ran for less than 12 hours before it started malfunctioning, it put itself into a defrost mode, even after being turned off for more than 24 hours all at all very sad.

We'd like to share some information about the defrost mode and provide some troubleshooting tips. The defrost cycle does happen automatically, when the unit detects it is needed, it can take around 30 to 45 minutes. We recommend trying out the troubleshooting steps here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=000062435 In the meantime, we will be reaching out over email to collect additional information. 50/50 product

I love this product when it actually wants to work. I use the water it says to use, I clean when the light shows up, I descale when and How i should, and there’s a problem every other week. I just bought a new filter 2 weeks ago, my app says itS good, but the machine will not make ice with it in.

Keep it cleaned!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The product works great and produces lots of ice in a short amount of time, however it must be kept clean and descaling often. I am having a problem with the internal float device determining if there's any water in it. We ran several cleaning cycles and let it sit for 18 hours, and this seems to have fixed the issue.
