Opal 2.0

"Cleaning" indicator started flashing on and off a couple of weeks after start of use. The indicator doesn't stop flashing even after a cleaning cycle is run. It doesn't seem to stop the machine from functioning however it is slightly annoying, sort of like a CEL in a car. Is there a fix for this? Online reviews say this is common glitch in the unit's software but no fix yet so it seems.

We want to help and provide some information to help with the cleaning light blinking on your Opal. You will want to run a a descale on your unit. Hold the clean button for 3 seconds to start the descaling process. You'll see the 'Cleaning" indicator appear while descaling. You can review a video with step-by-step instructions on how to properly clean and descale your Opal ice maker at the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geqQkQNL3i0. If the light is still flashing after the descale, please do a full reset by unplugging the unit for 2-3 minutes and then plugging the unit back in. If the issue continues, please reach out to initiate a warranty claim, by visiting GEAppliances.com/contact, or calling 1-833-4BODEWELL.

Not sure regular cleaning works

I thought it was the most amazing product Id ever owned until the warranty was up and I had to take it apart and clean it. Id been using vinegar and bleach alternately but it would show mold almost immediately so I finally took it apart and GROSS doesnt even come close! It was so bad on the inside...bleach didnt help!

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit here:https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale.

Love

So I have had it about 2 weeks and so far I’m loving it. It makes ice fast , I use only distilled water, when I wake up in the morning I have ice all ready for my iced coffee. The machine is large so make sure your counters are big enough for it. Makes little noise too . I wish it came with a holder for the ice scoop .. ordered one separately

Great but needs work.

I would give it five stars because of the quality and amount of ice it makes except the design of the machine where the buttons are is poorly designed. Also the cleaning button constantly flashes. With the GE app there is no way reset it after descale it. Ice is great, design needs improvement.

We'd like to assist with the cleaning button frequently flashing. We recommend performing a full clean and descale cycle for your unit. You can find instructions here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=000060634. If the light is still flashing, we suggest trying an electronic reset, by unplugging the unit for 2-3 hours, then plugging it back in. We will be passing your comments about the controls over to our app design team to review.

Great when it works

When the product works correctly it is great. 1 st one started making a squealing noise after 4 months. Received replacement that would not make ice at all. Have received 2 nd replacement that makes ice but not as well as first, some nuggets and a lot of slivers. Would return this one also, but working with the return department was difficult so I am just going to live with what I got.

We would like to help with your Opals ice not coming out solid. When you first start the Opal and it begins to make ice, the initial batches of ice nuggets will be slushy. After about 30 minutes, your Opal Ice Maker will make good, solid nuggets. There is an article on our website with more information you can view at the link here:https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39641&_gl=1*. We also suggest using distilled water in your Opal Icemaker. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. Another thing to check is making sure there is at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air about the unit.

Noises and knocking

I love having nugget ice but the loud noise it makes when it is making ice is unbearable. Cleaning it doesn’t make a difference. If I still had the box it was shipped in I would return it for a refund! With the technology you have you should be able to build a machine that does not whine and start knocking like it is.

We’d like to address the issue you’re having with sound. We have information about what sounds you may hear from the Opal at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=35276. Among other sounds, we expect whirring, humming, etc. We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal, to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. We also suggest ensuring you’re following the specific cleaning instructions in the manual, which start on page 7. The manual is linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. It is recommended that there be at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow, so that the fan can move air about the unit. If you think the sound you’re hearing isn’t normal, we suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours, before reconnecting; this can often help with an issue. We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss this situation with you further. We look forward to hearing back from you, so we can assist.

The best

Picked one up at good will still had the plastic protector on the cord 15 dollars. Never used, soaked it in vinegar and used a cleaning tablet. Then I had to purchase a side water container. Run the water I use thru a britta. Also got a filter for it. Runs like a champ love the ice.

Very good just noisy

Overall a very good product. This unit runs all the time and is not quiet. We had to move it from our bar to the pantry bc we could hear it during the night. But it makes ice quickly and we love the pellet ice. I would buy this item again.

Nice ice. I love it.

I've had this for three years and it's a good product. Only issues are with cleaning in which is not an easy process. It tends to build up scum in the water bin often.
