GE Opal Great Chewable Ice Maker

I had a GE Opal and switched when it died to another brand and am back with the GE Opal an very happy with the machine. These countertop machines have a limited life and do require routine maintenance to keep them from squealing.

Nuggets ice at home!

Perfect ice without the restaurant visit. Nuggets taste just like the famous restaurants. Suggest using distilled water, keep it on all the time. Ice ready fast and keeps making it as long as water is in the container. Easy to use and app is easy. Well designed, quality look and fits under a kitchen counter.

Pricey, but well engineered.

Makes great nugget ice, and lots of it. Started howling a week in. Ran a clean and no issues since.

2.0

two concerns: makes weird noises (my last one did not) doesn't keep the ice as solid as my last one overall though I love this ice machine, I did however like the first version better

I’m getting concerned!

Between the noise, the drainage, and the sometimes unexpected no ice in the mornings I am getting very concerned. I am happy I got a warranty on this ice maker. Sad part is that since I wake up some mornings and there is no or very little ice. And yes it’s got water in it and in the reservoir. I surely don’t want to move it to the RV nor purchase the same brand for the RV. At least at home it’s on a stable surface. So i can imagine what will happen if it doesn’t care for a ride in the RV. Anyway. I LOVE THE NUGGET ICE. But it’s a little noisy, the drainage thing got clogged and I have only had it about 3 months, and I set it to constantly make ice but some mornings I wake up to no ice. As an anemic GenX woman with Hot Flashes. I’m gonna need this thing to work all day and all night.

We’d like to assist with the issues you’re having with the ice production, the sound level, and drainage. We recommend ensuring you’re following the cleaning processes that are detailed starting on page 7 of your manual; that’s linked here: https://images.salsify.com/image/upload/s--ICQ21ZKI--/dc06c26a71060819d54b8d9bf6c53eb64be9dce9.pdf. Following these processes may help with each of the issues you’re having, and draining specifically is discussed on that page. For the issue with the sound level, we also suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for 3 to 4 hours before reconnecting, to reset it. Please ensure there are at least 4” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal as well, to allow for the proper air flow. We have more information about what to check for the issue with ice production at this link: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39628&_. We also have information about what to try when it isn’t making ice on schedule available here: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39643&. We’ll be reaching out over email to discuss this situation with you further. Please respond at your earliest convenience, so we can assist.

Perfect ice

We go through a lot of ice in our house. We previously had double ice make and when we upgraded the refrigerator we purchased one with ice in the top and the spheres on bottom. I didn’t realize the spheres only made 6 a day. We bought this ice maker to keep up with our needs and we love it. Only down side is having to clean it frequently. It’s fairly easy but a hassle nonetheless. If you have hard water I recommend using distilled water for the machine. Makes ice quickly and quietly as well. We bought a second unit for my youngest as she will be going to school. She was ecstatic.

Expensive but worth it!

It was an expensive ice machine but I'm very happy with it. We had an older style ice machine and it just couldn't keep up. This one makes plenty of ice for a family of four. I love the consistency of the ice and it makes new ice fast! It's quieter than our old machine but not completely silent. I would definitely recommend it if you use ice all day everyday like we do.

Major Squealing Noise Issues

I bought this unit as a replacement gift for my husband after our original ice maker finally died after 5 years of faithful service. The first few days with the Opal 2.0 were fantastic, but the excitement was very short-lived. Just a few days after unboxing and following every setup instruction to a T, the unit started making an unbearable noise. It was so loud and sudden that I genuinely thought someone was hurt in my home. Once I tracked down the source, I realized it was a high-pitched squealing coming straight from the ice maker. The squeal gradually grows louder over time, and the only way to stop it is to turn the machine completely off. Unfortunately Sam’s Club doesn’t allow to upload a video as a photo can’t share the noise. When I reached out to Sam’s Club for a resolution, I was told the item is now sold out, leaving us with only two choices: 1. Return it outright and be left without an ice maker. 2. Go through GE's warranty process. Dealing with GE warranty support has been anything but easy. To make matters worse, a quick read of GE's warranty terms reveals they reserve the right to replace your brand-new, defective unit with a refurbished model rather than a new one—or just issue a refund. Looking through other customer feedback, it’s clear this squealing noise is not an isolated incident; many others have reported the exact same defect. For a premium countertop appliance at this price point, having major mechanical issues within the first week—combined with tedious warranty hurdles—is unacceptable. Pros: Makes great nugget ice when it works. Sleek design. Cons: Horrible, loud squealing noise within days of setup. Must be turned off to stop the noise. Difficult GE warranty process with the risk of receiving a refurbished unit. Currently sold out at Sam's Club, making simple store exchanges impossible. Verdict: I cannot recommend this unit until GE addresses the widespread noise and mechanical reliability issues.

Very disappointed

Received ice maker as a gift. Very disappointed The ice maker would Make a very loud screeching noise, only way to stop the screeching was to unplug it. Clean it then restart and noise would start up again. motor ran continuously. Ice would make then water would run over the ice and melt it and start over again. At times machine also sounded like very loud crickets. Very disappointing. I only had machine for 3 days and returned it for a full refund.
