Residue can result from incorrect dosing, adding fabric softener during the wash instead of rinse cycle, or not adjusting the load size properly for the cycle. Overloading can prevent detergent from dissolving fully, especially if many absorbent items soak up water and limit circulation. For high-efficiency machines, adjust load size according to cycle: leave a hands gap for normal/cotton, fill about 60% for synthetics, and up to 40% for delicate/wool and quick cycles. Low water pressure or interruptions during the cycle can also cause residue. Additionally, some modern machines pre-turn the drum to sense load size, which may cause pods to end up improperly placed, affecting dissolution.
