TurboTax advertises “free filing,” but that was not my experience. I had a very simple tax return with nothing complex, yet I was still charged for federal filing. As someone with a background in accounting, there was absolutely nothing about my return that justified additional fees. The platform repeatedly steers users toward services they don’t need, such as audit defense and “additional deduction searches,” marketing them as if they are essential or likely to uncover money that may not even exist. For the average filer, these add-ons feel unnecessary and fear-based rather than helpful. The overall experience feels intentionally designed around dead ends and pressure tactics. Permissions and paid features are presented as if they are required, often without a clear or obvious way to skip them. One example is the push to pay a $35 fee for “faster” direct deposit, even though depositing your refund into your own bank account is already free through the IRS. Very little is explained clearly, and avoiding fees requires actively hunting for buried alternatives. It feels misleading and manipulative rather than transparent or user-friendly. Beware of the hidden paywalls — there are ways around many of them, but you shouldn’t have to fight software that advertises itself as “free.”

Easy to use and helpful but made on minor error... Originally it said it was best to keep standard deduction and skip itemizing deductions but luckily I went back and filled in the mortgage interest and property tax (substantial as a California resident) which took my IRS amount owed from $8000 down to $3300 and switched owing money to CA to a small refund.

I've used TurboTax for most of my adult life, and I've always known it to be a wonderfully convenient service. However, what once was a free service can now charge up to $128 between all the fees. I don't provide significant contributions, but I will be heavily considering an alternative method to filing my taxes.

I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and it has never let me down. It is easy to navigate and has helpful understandable guidance. The click and go features make navigation simple. The return is checked and double checked for accuracy prior to filing, which reduces any chance of issues with the IRS. I especially like the compatibility with W2 and other income and expense reports. The convenience of the ability to access my account from any device is huge bonus. I will continue to use Turbo Tax and highly recommend it to everyone.

I have used Turbo Tax for years and there are now some new options of receiving your refund payment. The first time through gives you 2 options. Klarna (5 days for $0.00) and then a faster method to your bank account of 4 days for a $35. I missed that until the end when I looked at the filing fees. Went back and had to search a bit for a longer to find the $0 refund deposit for the normal "21 days" Make sure you select the correct deposit option. That is a little sus TurboTax.

I have been using TurboTax since 2017. I can assure you that TurboTax is the best DIY filing service there is. Those who say TurboTax misses them extra money just doesn't know what they're doing. I've taken my w2 to other tax preparers just to compare numbers and TurboTax wins every time because people want to charge you hundreds of dollars extra just because they see the amount of your refund. Do your taxes yourself, pay for the tools that Turbo Tax gives you, they even give you a real, live, and in time tax expert to help you. I promise you will come out way cheaper using Turbo Tax

Not great. My initial refund for federal was 6,000, then decreased to 2,000 after I paid $88.00 to file. You also charge people who are filing unemployment 1099. Does that make sense charge people more given those circumstances? If I had a better option, I wouldn't use Turbo Tax. Turbo tax is a money thirsty and will find anyway to squeeze money out of honest tax payers.

TurboTax is way beyond appropriate monetization now. I will be going somewhere else next year. It's sad because I've been using this service for like 10 years. Pay a fee to use e-filing? Pay a fee to get direct deposit? Pay a fee to file federal, and a separate fee for state? Pay a fee for TurboTax to take the payment out of your return? Absurd. Thanks for the years of service.

It's fairly easy but the little hidden fees is crazy. Say do your taxes for free but then charge 49 dollars. The if you want to pay with your refund, 49 more dollars. Then direct deposit, yep 35 dollars. Good Lord free means no money guys. Be up front about your cost.

I am grateful for the online comfortability to do taxes. I felt reassured by the features and finalization process to determine the correct amounts to input and sources to upload. The app is convenient and easy to use from phone to laptop. It was easy to interface with the IRS and other institutions. I chose the MAX option for added reassurance.
