TurboTax - unwieldy, best of weak set of options

Turbo Tax 2025 continues to serve as an adequate income tax software application - but it also continues to be unnecessarily unwieldy in use... to be honest, it is WAY EASIER to consult Chat GPT to get advice on how to use your software than to use your instructions!! But one obvious suggestion: There needs to be a simple way to make the fonts bigger OR to allow the user to expand the screen. It's ridiculous that it should be so hard to see what's on the screen...I randomly asked 8 people for one recommendation and 7 people came up with that - completely unprompted! - as their overwhelming first issue. Funny that I can expand this comments screen, but cannot do that in your application. (Sound of hand slapping forehead) Using Turbo Tax is a choice in a weak field of options.

I GIVE UP IN 2025

Glitchy

I've been using Turbo Tax every year for decades and it's usually dependable. This year, the download software was so glitchy and frustrating that I had to discard and start my return over again several times. I had to hunt down the Intuit phone number to get live tech support. Thankfully, the wait time on the phone was only about 5-10 minutes, and the person I spoke to gave good instructions about how to troubleshoot the issue. Even so, I think my days using Turbo Tax are done.

not sure if I'll be back

Been using Turbo Tax for 30 years - this year was very glitchy (i.e. sending me to Canadian retirement when I clicked on Social Security). The boxes to select 1099DIV or 1099INT are cumbersome. Pretty, but not fluid. I am actually not sure I will buy it again next year. The red boxes & exclamation points are a bit alarming when I've not had the opportunity to make an entry. They can wait until I miss something. Take it back to simple graphics.

Great, but required manual entries

The interview in the desktop software would not let me enter medical expenses because it said we only qualified for the federal standard deduction. It DID let me add charitable donations. The software automatically entered our medical expenses based on our 1095-A form, but we had more expenses to enter. While we still only qualified for the FEDERAL return standard deduction, the additional expenses are beneficial for our state return. I added them manually via “Forms”, but it was VERY frustrating. I buy TurboTax to avoid the manual entries and to cover all possibilities. Fail. I looked online and found similar questions from multiple years back. Some answers were vague and some accusatory that users didn't understand what they were doing. I wasn't going to ask a forum question or pay for advice for something the software should do and I was able to figure out on my own.

TurboTax Hope You Listen

TurboTax needs more work.

I could not recommend TurboTax. I had too many problems getting this program up and running. One of the verifications was to check boxes but you have it on a box which was too small to get the whole picture. Also, there was a K-1 that should have had a form 703 associated with it because there were losses from that caused carryforwards that would have eaten up the profit reported in the current year.

Do you ever get users to try this stuff out?

Easy.. wouldn't allow me to edit/update a real estate transaction. Had to go to forms to do so!? Also said I didn't need any updates when I opened the app the last time to file. But then verification failed because you said I needed an update!? After the update, all the tax due amounts were zero for about 10 minutes!? Finally, I was able to file, but then it said it couldn't print my forms!? The Easy... form for 1099s (INT/DIV/B) is an absolute mess! The form for determining which stock sales are to be excluded from a state is also an absolute disaster. I had about 50. Once you've updated one, there's no way to tell in the list whether it's been done or not. And when you return to the form, it doesn't keep your location, but returns you to the first again (and again, and again). You seem to try to make it as hard as possible! And when you go back through a section it loses all the answers you put it before!??

Error with inherited IRA import

The import of an inherited IRA didn't work correctly and resulted in an error of $801. I paid for your advisor and we walked through the return and I actually found the error. I should be refunded the $60 for the advisor since I found the error and it was Turbotax's problem.

Lacking features

WIsh it would remember more of what was entered in previous years. Like it should remember information on the type of retirement income. Who remembers five years later. If I entered it was an inheritage IRA, then it should remember it. Not sure why we have to pay to efile state returns. And why purchasing additional states is so expensive, half the price of the entire program!

Not as Good as H&R Block

I used H&RB for years, decided to try TurboTax. Overall I found it more confusing than HRB, less intuitive, and continuous up-sale efforts. The most frustrating was when I want to apply my state return amount to next year's taxes and had to use a generic AI on-line tool to figure this out as it was hidden in the state return instead of being an option when you file. I will be returning to HRB moving forward.

Canadian Registered Pension Income bug

in the 2025 tax year software I encountered a bug which forces you into answering information for “Canadian Registered Pension Income”. It happened to me twice, once on my tax forms, and once on my mother's tax forms. I entered the retirement plan information (mine) or pension plan information (my mom) and then entered the Social Security income information. After that, it had a question about checking if the social security income was taxable due to living abroad (no) and then was asked if received any lump sum payments (no). The next screen asked for the name to use to identify this Canadian registered retirement plan. I clicked “Back” and it went to a Canadian retirement plan summary list. I clicked on the trash can and it asked if I was sure I wanted to delete this “Canada RRP Wks”. I clicked Yes and it went to the Canadian retirement plan summary list which was now empty. I clicked Continue and it displayed the full 2025 Income Summary with the Canadian Registered Pension Income still listed (although $0). I found no easy way to delete it.
