Turbo Tax is Not User Friendly

Sometimes it's too difficult to use the search function and find where to go into the program to change numbers that are not correct. Also, your glitch back in around 2021 or 2022 where my carryforward short term capital gains doubled from the correct amount (this is a glitch you gus apparently know about), caused me a lot of hours last night trying to figure out if my AMT carry over was really zero or not. Using AI I found an explanation of that issue plus a good discussion about how short term capital losses should count against my AMT this year and so I, through hours of work, reduced my taxes by $65,000 by finding the error caused by Turbo Tax and fixing it in my Federal Tax form and CA tax form, but it caused my a lot of pain, anguish, and lack of sleep.

Formerly Great, Now Prolonged Manual Entry Mess

I have been using TT for decades, and my impression is that the quality of the product is declining. Every year there seems to be more manual entry required. At the most basic level, I couldn't even import my USAA 1099's. I'm willing accept tha increasing complexity is part of the problem, but what you've done with charitable deductions is unconscionable. With It's deductible, entry was relatively easy. The new system is more that cumbersome, it's an abomination and creating a new form 8283 is insane.

TT is a great poduct

TT is an amazing product for how much it does to help simplify the leviathan Federal and State Tax Codes. I can't imagine a better product. 1. During the filing process I was not asked to get an IP PIN so the first transmission failed. 2. During file TT said I need to mail in paper copies of my Fede tax return. This is not necessary.

Turbo Tax needs to do better

I was hoping for a clear, thorough walk through with lots of hand-holding to guide me through the process. I bought the Desktop Premier version thinking I would get ample built-in support for the murky areas. I didn't get it. I mostly felt that TT designed the product to encourage you to pay even more for their human help services.

Found a Flaw!!

Had to manually enter my CA Employee retirement system info. The program would not let me enter this years in the saved file. When I would try to enter it, it would take me to the "Download from your investment account" page. I finally just entered it as a new 1099-R and then deleted the old one.

Still a lot of money for limited help.

Not focused at all for foreign based people with no W2, rental income in the USA left behind, stocks (with foreign withholding pecularities) and other very common but confusing situations. There is really no good slution for the millions fo folks abroad and it does not really get better as the years move on.

TurbTax Has Quality Has Declined Significantly

I have been using TurboTax for many decades to prepare and file my Federal and State returns. This year (and last year) were far more problematic than past experience. For example, I pay all of my charitable contributions directly from my IRA which at my age reduces my taxable income without having to choose the option of itemizing deductions. For the 2025 return I could not get TurboTax to reduce my taxable income in recognition of the QCDs made from my IRA, In desperation I turned to ChatGPT which provided a work around to solve the problem. There were a number of other glitches that were very time consuming to figure out how to work around them. I did not bother to point out the problems to Turbotax because of what happened last year. When working on my 2024 returns I had identified a programing error in my state return when it computed my required estimated payments for 2025. If I had not identified the problem I would have been subjected to to a serious penalty for underpaying my state estimated payments for 2025. I spent hours on the phone with TurboTax tech people to get them to fix the problem. They said the only way they could verify the problem would be to remotely take over my computer and see for themselves what was going on. However, they could not get the remote control program to work. I said, o.k., I will send you a screen shot. The TurboTax tech folks said that would not work. They had to do it themselves. After wasting several hours with them I gave up and my state program continued to have the programming error I had identified. This year, when the time came to print and file my returns the program hung up with a spinning wheel that just kept going around and around for a very long time claiming it was "Calculating." At that point in the process there was nothing left to calculate. I could only get the spinning wheel of death to stop by clicking on the "Back" button and then going forward again. This happened several times. In addition, at one point in the process a pop-up told me I should purchase the Premier version of the program rather than stick with the Deluxe version I was using. I purchased the "upgrade"it in an abundance of caution. However, my 2025 return was not materially different than in previous years and the Deluxe version always worked well and I never had to buy a different version while working on my returns. Lastly, the version of Deluxe I originally purchased included a $10 credit for in app purchases. I did not see that credit appear when purchasing the Premier upgrade of the program or when I paid the charge for the e-file of my State return. Given the problems I have run into last year and this year it is hard to give TurboTax a positive rating.rience

No Internet Taxes

User Experience Not Tested Sufficiently

Two issues that need to be addressed are (1) when I imported from financial institution TurboTax created some new institution boxes for me in addition to the ones it brought in from last year. That led to confusion about 1099-DIV and 1099-INT entry. If you are going to bring in boxes from as year, tn make sure when I import from those same places you dont create duplicate boxes, Also, the desktop software had to be conneted to the internet or you didnt see the new pencil and trash can icons or the svg files for Dividend, Interest, etc. buttons in the investment section. Those should be included in the download installation and not require you be internet connected. That led to confusion because it said NEEDS REVIEW and there was no way to review given we were not on the internet. I don't connect to the internet while doing taxes except for one import.

Billing Interface Issues

Had a credit card billing issue when processing payment for my son's tax return. $20 state return fee processed and provided a confirmation online and by email but upon returning to the turbo tax application received a message that the payment did not go through. Verified it did go through on my Chase account. Ended up using the $40 fee payment using his federal refund to insure it processed, and was charged the $20 state fee from the federal refund for a $60 total. Plus I have the $20 credit card payment that did process. I hope to cancel the initial $20 fee that was paid.

Huh? What is Turbo Tax asking?

The tricky part about using Turbo Tax is understanding the questions it is asking. It also sometimes seems to go down the wrong pathway. For example, after I entered the income from my work pension (I retired a dozen years ago) it insisted that I answer questions about an RMD. Try as I may there was no way around this. Googling this issue turned up other people asking about the same thing. The answer provided by Turbo Tax gave precise steps but still got to a point where it said to enter the RMD. There isn't one; that doesn't apply. It has never asked that question before. I gave up and entered the taxable amount of the pension as the RMD and it let me proceed.
