Lots of Time Wasted

Yesterday I did a quick review but did not articulate some of the problems. 1. In my folder there are multiple files for the same tax return. Type is TurboTax 2025 document. In previous years never had this occur. 2. If I have a file that I am working on but saved then later restart TurboTax and after an Update, the my Tax Return with Continue button does not show. I have to go to File and Open Tax Return. This is never occurred w previous years 3. Over the years I had at least 3 different TurboTax accts. I never took time or had the info from prior years handy to keep using the same acct. This year it bit me. Took a long, frustrating journey to get handle on the two most recent acct IDs and Passwords. Yes my self inflicted situation, but wish there was a more better way to deal with getting a handle on this maybe consolidating accounts. 3. At some point things were not going well. I used the Help which directed me to and article or something that recommended getting an update which I had to invoke. The update appeared to be the entire program updated. But things worked better. Not great. 4. Some of the phrases or language used is not specific enough. The most difficult for me was a SSA-1099 lump sum provided in 2025 for year 2024. The explanation and help for this was not very helpful. The Community Help was a bit better, but I still did not have a full grasp of the logic tree for the way it is handled based of various metrics. When I looked at the worksheet form my eyes rolled up in my head. The IRS is getting too complex which makes your job more difficult. 5. I talked to two support people (for program not tax info). I started via Chat help and then selected call. I held for 25 min or so for the first tech person who I could ne hear well due to her phone connect or whatever. She said she was making adjustments and next thing I was disconnected. Called again and another 20 min wait and got Allen. Allen did great. He listened very well, even some whining then proceeded to help. It lead to sharing my screen. Bottom line he got me and things straight. 6. Bottomline I put in an huge amount of time in dealing with 2025 TurboTax Desktop Premium. So much so I am thinking of going to a local preparer or HR Block program next year.

Going downhill FAST

The overall Turbotax experience continues to worsen. Especially in the past two years. It is very obvious with the continuous upsell marketing of LIVE HELP, that this is where where you are putting all your energy and resources. Your interface is horrible, with confusing and often unbearably and unworkable functions (ie .. import of previous years tax return data, import of financial institution data, printing for review and saving return, etc.). Support is non existent for these glaring software shortcomings.

Revisions don't always equal improvement.

1. Put the charities in alphabetical order or give me the ability to do this I have a lot o fcharities on the list. As I go trough receipts, I have to hunt for the charity to open 2. the prior method of entering charities was much better and streamlined. The change you made went backward. Please dont change methods unless its an improvement. 3. valuating item donations is less usable. There are fewer choices to select from, and require constant entry of dates for the same bag of items. My question to IT always is, are the changes made because some change is required every "X" years, or maybe a project for an intern? I've used TurboTax for more than 20 years and it was bothersome to use the revised method. 4. I was surprised I could not find an answer to what I feel is not an uncommon questioin. I am retired and have three income sources that need an RMD. But I take all the RMD from two of the three. The total of the withdrawals from the two more than cover the third. This is OK per discussion with others but wanted to see such in writing from Turbotax. Could not find anything from questions in the forum or in help.

One suggestion

Turbo Tax worked well for me - it has for years. I was surprised to see that when I prepared my return, the wasn't any notification of the IRS form CP53E, wherein the IRS requests direct deposit information (Routing and account numbers). This is apparently the IRS' attempt to move away entirely from paper check refunds. I think that there should have been a paragraph on this in the section where the filer would possibly select a refund by check, to advise that the IRS is working to move away from the check option.

Turbo Tax shortfall.

I don't want to e-file my state return because of the $25 charge. I need to send a check for my state tax return, but Turbo Tax did not give me the proper instructions to do this. It gave me the instructions after e-filing which is absolutely useless to me. I had to go to the FTB website in order to get the correct information.

Taxes suck but you make it bearable

I'm hoping the accuracy is excellent and you will certainly hear from me if it is not. I tried the online feature first, but did not realize that I wouldn't be able to use it for my MIL and my daughter's taxes. That made me cranky. I went back to downloading it, which I found easier to use anyway. I clicked on a radio button for W4 or estimated taxes, but it wouldn't let me turn it off. Yuck.

Frustration with Online version's limitations

My experience was somewhat frustrating. After purchasing TurboTax Premier because I had some capital gains this year through the sale of a house, I was prompted (encouraged) to switch to TurboTax Online. After entering all of my income data. I found the online version could not handle this level of input. Not wanting to somehow accidentally "double file" I clicked the "clear and start over" only to find out AFTER re-launching the desktop version, that it could have imported all of that data (which I had just deleted) FROM the online version.

Turbo Tax Support Rocks

Had an issue when entering the license code - Turbo Tax was reporting it was invalid. The instructions indicate Windows 11 is required. What the instructions don't advise is that ALL system updates also need to be performed. I used the 800 number to contact support and the woman who connected was very patient, walked me through the updates, and stayed on the phone until Turbo Tax was ready for me to start my return. I am very grateful to her.

Getting better Year over Year.

Pretty nice software though sometimes info carried over from prior years doesn't fit right in. As in a 1099 Int form, if TurboTax can't link to the company to download the form you need to manually enter the info. Even if you entered that 1099 Int form from that company in prior years it is still a manual entry.

Lack of total integration to 2024 filing

I was disappointed that the system would not calculate my 2024 Social Security Adjustment payment. I had to do a good bit of research to figure it out before I could file. Also, it required me to research my 2024 Spousal Tax Liability adjustment, another time consuming effort, even though I was able to import my correct 2024 Turbotax return.
