Great grind and brew unit

We have been using a french press and percolator for the last few years. The coffee has been great, but we wanted to get back to a grind and brew coffee maker with auto programming and burr grinder built in. Cuisinart has been our go to brand of coffee maker over the years. We did try a couple of other brands, but they were far more expensive and we felt the cost didn't yield us better features or a similar taste result of our french press and percolator. We've had this one since right after Christmas. It's been working fine. Read the owner manual. There are great tips for brewing great coffee. Remember, the type of coffee beans matter. It's a personal choice too. We prefer Columbian Arabica for a medium body coffee brew with low acidity. The only problem we've had is finding paper filters that fit the basket housing. Most have sides that are too high or too low, both of which cause different problems with overflowing grinds. We're using the gold metal filter that came with it, but prefer paper to quell some of the balance we look for in a great cup of coffee.

Convenient and Reliable

We recently bought this grind+brew as a replacement for a similar Cuisinart device we had used daily for about 10+ years. It's easy to operate and has worked well for us; much less countertop mess than in the distant past when we had to rely on a separate grinder. My daughter favors the pour-over process, but we aren't such coffee connoisseurs that I could really say how the quality compares.

Review-Cuisinart Burr Grind & Brew 12c Coffeemaker

I had the previous model for many years and when it finally gave up the ghost (leaking for some reason when it made coffee), I wanted the same coffee machine. Of course it had been "updated" and we have had a problem getting the carafe seated correctly under the filter basket so that it doesn't miss the hole in the lid of the carafe and leak when coffee is brewing. Seems the hot plate was made larger but there is ring that the carafe needs to be positioned in. This is very far back on the hot plate and a bit difficult to get the carafe set into correctly. Our guests who are not familiar with this requirement have had their coffee spill out and all over the counter, down the cabinets and onto the floor, often wasting at least 1/2 pot of brewed coffee.

Issue at first

Purchased the DGB-800 around 6/5 and from day 1 it would not brew all 12 cups after setting it to 12. Only 3 times it worked while I had it for just short of 30 days. I took it back and they sent me a new one and this one works perfectly!.Gave 4 stars due to the hassle I went through until I got the replacement (which was shipped very fast). I have been using the grind and brews for years and they are great coffee makers.

Coffee!

This is my second Burr Grind and Brew Cuisinart coffee pot. The 1st pot's control panel failed after about two years. Of course, I had sent in the Warranty papers and Cuisinart agreed to send another Burr Grind and Brew coffee pot. Great, only problem was no Burr Grind and Brew coffee pot were available at the time. I then reluctantly accepted a Cuisinart Pour over coffee pot and found out quickly that this was not the same coffee experience. So after sometime, I saw that the Burr Grind and Brew was back in stock and order my second Burr Grind and Brew. If you like fresh ground coffee in the morning this is the pot for you! Once you get the hang of it, it works wonderfully and makes a great Cup of coffee.

The Good and the Bad

I’ve have owned 2 DGB 900’s one with glass and one with stainless pot. They lasted 7-8 years each. Since then I bought a DGB 800, (I’ve had 3) the first lasted about 6 months ( it quit brewing), the second lasted about 4 months (it guit brewing also) I’m on the 3rd, now so it’s working, but have had a little over a month. Keeping my fingers crossed, my biggest mistake was going for the less expensive product not knowing it would be such a pan. Thanks Tony

Choices

Nice unit, works fine. Not a great replacement for the individual Cuisinart coffeemaker and burr grinder I had for many years. Getting the right brew strength was a guessing game using the Strength and Cup number(even numbers only) choices. Now changing either of those settings and deciding how much water to use is still a guessing game. I would go back to my original set-up if I had the choice.

Great coffee, mostly reliable

I have had a similar Cuisinart Burr coffee maker in the past. This one makes great coffee like the other one. We do keep encountering an error “Empty” message (despite an empty & clean filter). An intermittent nuisance. Customer service has been responsive & helpful though.

Too many grounds in the Pot

This is my 3rd or 4th grind and brew. The design has completely changed in the new one. You don’t have to clean the parts anymore which could go in the dishwasher, so it was no problem. It never left grounds in the pot. The new one does leave grounds in the pot and scattered in the machine. It does not hold as many beans in the hopper, so you have to fill it often. The carafe retains water in the top rim. I loved my former ones!!! I’m sorry the design has been changed.

Downgrade from previous models

I bought this as a replacement for the previous generation. This unit is quieter, and has a basket that is easier to clean. However, more grounds make it through the filter, the only choice for a carafe is glass (I had an insulate one before and it does not work with this updated model). Be careful when you place the carafe in, if it isn't seated properly, it leaks. I've had to clean my counter twice. This model is also mostly plastic on the outside and looks cheap compared to the model I had with a stainless exterior. The old model lasted 10+ years. let's see if this one can keep up. Oh, and you cannot get these coffee makers fixed. The entire machine must be replaced when something goes wrong. I expected more from my Cuisinart.
