Maintenance makes it not worth having

The ice is great BUT the maintenance sucks. This thing constantly has a dark gross film that comes back a couple of days after cleaning it. I've left vinegar in it for DAYS and still can't get it clean. If you have a filter, you're probably fine, but for regular water and especially hard water be prepared to constantly be cleaning this thing.

Don't Waste Your Time and Money

It worked great for about 4 months in the winter. We only used bottled water for the machine and side tank. It started running continuously and the ice would melt. Don't waste your time with this one especially for the price. The highest priced unit is not always the best and here is the poster child.

Quick ice.

Loving the ice nuggets. Works quietly and has night light. Makes perfect ice nuggets, large capacity holding tank. Is about half an inch to tall to fit under countertop. Had to locate on top of a small refrigerator used for drinks. The external tank must be removed to fill with water rather than pouring water from the top, a slight inconvenience.

Great ice, poor quality, and is failing already

Bought Nov. 30, 2025, started making and odd groaning noise after two weeks and seems like the water level sensor and pump are failing. It asked for descaling after 1st 100 hours and I use distilled water only. This tells me I think descale is based on time, not actual need. Did descale and rinse which is a pain and can get messy with side tank. Once or twice a day I have to add water in the unit water reservoir after about 2 weeks after I got it which is what leads me to think the noise is the water pump as reservoir is half full, and the side tank is completely full. After I purchased I see this is one of the major complaints. I’m giving it till new years and if doesn’t correct it self it’s going back. The ice is very nice. The unit looks very good, but the noise is louder than I expected from the unit and I had no idea the maintenance on. It would be such a pain. If I had to do all over again, I would not purchase it’s not worth the labor

Terrible Screeching after only 3 months

If we could give it zero stars we would. We owned this for less than 3 months and it started making these loud screeching noises. Even though it didn't indicate that it needed it, we gave it a good clean and it still screeched and screeched. Terrible... Certainly not what we expected from a GE Profile product.

Great ice!

Great ice! I tried an off brand small ice marker but the ice does not stay as long as this one does. I have had an Opal before then tried the off brand but came back to the Ge! Highly recommend it!

Very poor quality! I went through defective 3 Opal Ice Machines purchased from GE before finally giving up. The pumps are poorly designed and constructed and either quit or screech forever and then quit. I DO NOT recommend this machine at all!

Doesn’t last

I bought this in November of 2024. It has already given up. I took care of it, cleaned and descaled on scheduled according to the manual. Now it doesn’t make ice at all. It forever stays on that blue signal saying it needs water even when it’s full. I cleared the water lines and there’s no blockage. Apparently the pumps give out after a year to make people buy new machines

We'd like to assist you with your Opal having a blue light indicator constantly. We recommend placing the Opal into Cleaning Mode using the switch located on the back of the appliance, then pressing the front Power button. Allow the Opal to run in this mode for approximately three minutes. During this time, if the pump is operating correctly, you will be able to see and hear water pumping through the unit. If water begins pumping, this confirms the pump is functioning properly, and you can switch the ice maker back to Ice Mode and resume ice production. However, if water does not begin pumping during this time, or if the Opal continues to display a blue light even though the pump appears to be working, we recommend calling our Opal team at 866-907-6718 for further assistance.
