I purchased a Members Mark Grill in late 2023. By 2024, the igniter had malfunctioned, yet I continued to use the grill, anticipating a simple replacement part. In early 2025, I contacted Members Mark/Sam's Club customer service to request a replacement igniter, only to be informed that my sole option was to return or exchange the grill at a local Sam's Club because the replacement part was no longer available.
I recently proceeded to dismantle the grill myself, which posed an unnecessary physical and logistical burden, so I could transport it to the club. Upon arrival, the customer service representative wouldn't accept the return because the item was outside the return window. After I insisted that I was directed to bring the grill to Sam's Club to return or exchange by Member's Mark/Sam's Club Customer Service, she proceeded to contact her supervisor. After reviewing their system, the supervisor also insisted that the return could not be processed. This of course contradicts the Members Mark lifetime guarantee policy, which clearly states that customers may return or replace products “anytime.”
I contacted Members Mark Customer Service on the phone while still in the store. That Member's Mark customer service agent now presented three options: return the grill for refund or exchange at the club, attempt to procure a replacement part through the manufacturer (again), or arrange for the grill to be picked up from my home. I had already taken the grill apart and brought it to the store. So, I was not taking it back home! I chose to return the grill at the club.
Subsequently, the customer service representative emailed confirmation that the store could accept the return. Showing this to the supervisor required managerial approval before the return and refund were finally processed.
My concerns are:
The product failed within 2 years, which is unacceptable for a grill of this type (it was the Pro series)
I was initially misinformed that my only recourse was to return the entire grill, rather than obtaining a replacement part.
Store personnel demonstrated a lack of awareness regarding the Members Mark return policy, resulting in a confusing and drawn-out experience.
The necessity to disassemble the grill myself imposed an undue burden and compounded the frustration of the return process when it's their fault that there's no replacement part.
Members Mark and Sam's Club maintain a policy that permits customers to return or replace Members Mark products “anytime,” underscoring their commitment to customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, the practical execution of this policy relies heavily on store-level staff knowledge and system capabilities. This gap between policy and practice must be addressed to prevent future customer dissatisfaction.
It is imperative for Members Mark and Sam's Club to improve employee training and internal communication to ensure policies are consistently upheld and customers are not subjected to avoidable hardship.
