Watery?

Have happily used Land O' Lakes butter for decades. Recently the butter seems thin or watery, especially when melted. Sometimes it actually looks like it's separating! When I fry eggs in your butter, it literally pops loudly and spatters me and the stovetop!! After several weeks of this, i decided to write to you. Has something changed - or am I crazy?

Verified Purchase

Happiness rating: On a score of 1-10 it is a -5.

I was told that the substitution was to be Land O Lakes salted butter instead of your house brand of butter. What I got was Land O Lakes margarine. I did not want margarine!!! Now I have to go in your store to get some butter. Actually I'll go to a small local convenience market. So you lose a $3.00 sale. That's not significant, but you should know of my unhappiness.

Taste and texture has changed.

For years I have solely used Land O Lakes butter salted. It spread well, tasted good on toast and popcorn and was perfect for my favorite cookies. Something has changed. It has very little taste on homemade bread and popcorn and my butter cookies became a solid mess in the refrigerator. Since I stocked up on L0L butter a few weeks ago, I won't be changing in the near future. However, when I've finished using what I have, I'll probably try another brand. This is sad because I've always loved this brand. I probably will put out a different stick for Christmas gatherings.

BOOOOO to the changes!

I have aexclusively used your product for many years. Recently, I thought it tasted a bit different and I was glad to come across these reviews! I agree. I don't know what has changed but it wasn't for the good. Then, yesterday, I read that you are abandoning your mascot of 92 years. BOOOOOOOO. I AM Native and didn't find it even slightly offensive. Another one bites the dust. Sad.

Thank you for your comments. As Land O'Lakes looks toward the 100th anniversary of our cooperative in 2021, we’re seeking new ways to tell our farmer-owned story to consumers. We’re doing this by rolling out new packaging for our products, which began in 2019. The new packaging features words like “Farmer-owned” and “Since 1921” above vibrant images of land and lakes. While the packaging is new, the ingredients in the products have not changed and the same delicious products are inside. Please look for an email from us

So Very Disappointed

For all of my 50 years of marriage, Land O Lakes was the only butter I would use. Over the past year I have seen decreased flavor, inability to soften, and increased separation when melting. I agree with some of the other comments that it even seems greasy, rather than creamy. I do not like the new Flavor Protect Wrapper - it is harder than the butter inside and almost seems waxy. I cannot find anything that explains exactly what it is. I have started experimenting with other brands and have found several that I like better.

Plastic Wrapper Ends a Century of Smart Packaging

After being wrapped in compostable wax paper for likely a century, I was greatly disappointed to see your wrapper was changed to a plastic coated alternative. Rather than going to my composter, we now have to throw it into the nonrecyclable, uncompostable plastic-filled trash can. Land-o-Lakes goes backward on sustainability and I'm more than disappointed.

We are sorry for your disappointment with our FlavorProtect™ Wrapper. This wrapper keeps other flavors out and the fresh taste in. Your comments will be forwarded to our Packaging team.

Quality has gone downhill

I have been using Land O Lakes for baking for over 25 years. In recent years, the quality has gone downhill. The butter does not soften correctly and seems to spread too much which really impacts the cookie quality. I am not sure if they changed their recipe. At first, I thought perhaps it was user error but alas, I switched brands and the problem resolved itself.

Recipe Change

Thank goodness I found these reviews. I thought I was crazy. Something changed in the production process where the milk fat is different. I have been baking with only Land O Lakes for years. The butter does not soften anymore when left out at room temperature. You cannot “cream” the butter into sugar. It is almost like using Crisco. I too will sadly have to find another butter. This is no longer an acceptable product. Please try it for yourself and see if you can soften it without the microwave.

Packaging deceptive

We have been buying LOL for years recently the packaging has changed and SALTED needs to be more PROMINENT on package! My husband has been eating the WRONG butter for days and is on a sodium controlled diet, under 2000 mg per day and it matters darn it! Salted in small 1 shade off green color band is not sufficient especially since he is color blind and had to view on zoom in website to even see it, totally missed it on package. Saw blue stripe which is traditionally used for only un-salted packages and bought it.

What has changed?

I just made and baked the same Christmas cookie I've been making for 50 years. When I creamed the butter and the sugar, it never really creams. This has never happened before. The dough was different. They didn't get as big as they usually do. They were harder. They usually melt in your mouth. Also, when i took them out to soften, never got as soft as I needed them after two hours on counter. What is going on??
