continued detractors

Note: a long time user of TT. 1. Main detractor - a big one. Wastes much time. Foreign income tax credit is almost impossible to use. All the data is imported from Merrill Lynch, and yet you still ask questions I do not understand, much less the choices and how to proceed. I finally figured out how to get to form 1116 and enter manually. A perennial issue, and you keep changing what works. 2. Getting to the actual IRS forms and schedules is not very user friendly, even for a long time user.

AWESOME...almost

Its deductible didn't download automatically due to a change with this years TurboTax. Whatever that change was, I spent a good 30 minutes on the phone with a TurboTax rep to "by-pass" the normal download sequence. This should have been trouble-shot prior to releasing the 2017 TurboTax. I hope it gets fixed next year, or, I'll be on the phone again with another workaround.

Always easier with TurboTax

I have been using TurboTax since the first year it was available. I did try another product one year and was not happy with it. TurboTax is always accurate, easy to use and I can always go back several years to review past taxes by keeping the yearly programs on my computer. The only problem I have is the surprise every year that I have to pay for State e-filing. Certainly not necessary and I wish TurboTax would get rid of that surprise.

Not too happy

After years of use, I'm increasingly dissatisfied with the cost to buy and to file. Sadly forced I to look at other tax prep alternatives before I sign on to TurboTax again. And that's sad. Ease of use is also not moving forward, repeatedly having to click through details of already completed sections just to review one aspect of the section. Still lots to like, but the aggravation level seems to be rising. And where's the quick look at the 2018 taxes. I've done a bunch of forecasting and planning myself. Can't intuit rough up something informal to shed some light on the topic. (Or does it come up after this review tab?)

It needs help

(a) Married joint vs separate filing: Year after year, the TT advice is that usually filing joint is better. That doesn't cut it, especially when state taxes are concerned (since you'll file the same way for state). My state, Ohio, is notorious for abusing couples who file jointly. Of course, TT does tell you to do your taxes both ways to be sure, but that requires entering data twice. What TT should do is tell you to create separate returns for each spouse - and then provide a utility to merge those 2 returns automatically into a joint return for comparison. That would be quite convenient and helpful - and it's simple programming on the TT side. (b) State refunds from last year: Millions of people have them - and in some cases they're taxable. Since I did my 2016 taxes in TT and loaded them into my 2017 return, TT should figure if my state refund last year is taxable this year. It does not. TT asks me if I itemized (it knows this already) - and then tells me to go back and refigure my taxes from last year myself. Otherwise, they say, we'll just treat all of your refund is taxable. (c) IRA recharacterizations and conversions: IRAs, including any non-deductible contributions, are handled in two separate areas. I don't understand why. And the interview questions are somewhat misleading. If you had IRA withdrawals, recharacterizations and/or conversions, you really need to understand what your tax implications are and how the values should appear on the final Federal forms. Otherwise, you may end up paying way more tax than you should. (d) And finally ... once again ... for my wife's return, TT issues payment vouchers for estimated taxes. She's getting a refund this year (albeit small), as she has every year. She's never had to pay estimated taxes. Never.

Taxers done in nothing flat

It took me a bit to figure I'd have to order online and download Turbo Tax this year, I like the CD on hand should I have to look back years later for an adjustment but never needed it. Still had taxes done in less than an hour this year and I'm filed in nothing flat. Now if the DoD would sufficiently tax my DoD retirement I might actually get a refund someday...

Frequent Updates

So many updates - almost every other time I load Turbo Tax. Leaves me with a very uneasy feeling when I filed in late February - early March and 4 more updates have occurred since. Makes me wonder what is missed/wrong about the form I filed. (No list of changes). I guess I should just wait until April to file to make sure I caught all the updates?

Errors between worksheets and tax forms

When you earn income partially in one state and partially another state, Turbo Tax will make you pay taxes in both states for certain types of income earned in the other state. You need to go into the tax forms to fix the problem. This is the last time I used Turbo Tax.

Comprehensive, yet easy to use!!

I have been using TurboTax as far back as I can remember. The program is easy to use and they walk you through things step by step to make sure nothing gets overlooked. Their import tool is a life saver, specifically with respect to required reporting of capital gain and loss transactions. The import tool has progressed through the years to include so many different forms (i.e. W-2s, Mortgage Interest, Interest, Dividends) making it easy for the average person to complete complex tax returns. It reduces the time spent inputting information and provides more time to find ways to reduce tax liabilities now and in the future.

Says I have an error just before filing - Really !

does not transfer to MS tax very well. Had to renter some information and kept asking for other state information which there is none and I had told it that fact. Also, when about to press final button for efile it says that there is one problem and need information on one of my forms. Really ! it did not complain about that in all the previous reviews.
