Turbotax on the rise

I have been using turbo tax for many years. The website to submit questions or search for questions is a bit of a mess. I do not find it very helpful. I have tried multiple questions or changing the wording. Providing the capability to ask a question to a person was excellent. They were very helpful. I like that turbo tax is able to import forms and use them, this saves me a lot of entry

Overall good program

Have been using TurboTax for years- like the familiarity and ability to transfer info from year to year, ease of entering most data Need better functionality for MFS v MFJ comparison! I shouldn't have to input 3 times to get the comparison (as that was the recommendation when I used the help feature)!!! Need to change some items in the education credits and using a section 529 plan- seems like I struggle every year to get my son's information input correctly to offset his education expenses. I waste so much time just trying to remember how I had to do it to correct the input. I talked to some others in the same situation and they are no longer using TurboTax because it is difficult to get that functionality to work. Need to change some items to "fit" on the screen- there were several items that required a scroll down to see the "next" button.

Taxers done in nothing flat

It took me a bit to figure I'd have to order online and download Turbo Tax this year, I like the CD on hand should I have to look back years later for an adjustment but never needed it. Still had taxes done in less than an hour this year and I'm filed in nothing flat. Now if the DoD would sufficiently tax my DoD retirement I might actually get a refund someday...

Frequent Updates

So many updates - almost every other time I load Turbo Tax. Leaves me with a very uneasy feeling when I filed in late February - early March and 4 more updates have occurred since. Makes me wonder what is missed/wrong about the form I filed. (No list of changes). I guess I should just wait until April to file to make sure I caught all the updates?

Done (maybe)

The way to handle Exempt Interest Dividends was difficult to understand. Our Broker indicated there was no State Tax exposure, but Turbo Tax wanted listing of all States that were involved. To indicate no States were involved, or to accept risk of higher State Taxes, you had to click box indicating more than one State involved and leave all lines blank in entry box that popped up. State Taxes included a form U might be needed, but there was no way to look at the form and definition of exceptions to completion was vague (does the statement: there was no State Tax liability in the prior Tax Year mean that there were no State Taxes at all in the prior year or that there were no State Taxes due at the time of filing?).

Easy navigation and smooth process

Completed my tax Federal and State tax returns in short order; mine required Schedules B, D and E. It was very convenient to directly import 1099 data from various 'partners'. When you do this, as a lay person, it is not always clear how the items were populated in the tax forms. Also, previous year's import helps. Appreciated how quickly I could do all this.

Turbotax details

Turbotax is easy to use. It's intuitive and it's easy to go back and make changes as necessary. I especially like the review process that double checks for potential problems. One thing I'd like to see improved is obscure things ike where to file for timber sales and things like that. If you're not willing to be persistent you might not find what you're looking for.

being my own accountant

This was the first time I did my own taxes in 6 years, and I was nervous that things would be missed, but comparing to prior returns I do not find that to be the case. There was one number that was much different and it was because of a tax code change, so I wish they would have explained that on "why is there a difference" instead of giving general information on differences, however besides that the process was easy, only a little painful (from gathering all the documents), and I feel confident I did it correctly and will not get audited.

Buggy this year...

1099-misc entries kept forcing me into self-employment questions. Had to trick the system to complete things. Still has poorly worded questions for the 'unusual' items. (e.g. Foreign Tax Credit - Box 6) Overall a great product. This year just had a few misses that were frustrating.

Adequate Software for Doing Taxes

This year was fairly similar to previous years but two things were added to my return without any explanation. After deleting a prior year's Partnership Form 1065 I noticed that the Partnership was still printing out on page 2 of our Schedule E. In my opinion that my raise some questions if audited when a Partnership is listed without any income listed. Another Form was added to my return without explanation as to why it was added. We have a Schedule F which was properly attached. However, another supplemental form adding an additional income stream was added without any input that wasn't already listed on Schedule F. When I tried to find the source of where the additional income was located there was none. So, as I do every year, I look at a .pdf or printed copy of my return to see if something doesn't look proper and highly recommend everyone do so. Snake
