Third Year Results

After paying a tax preparer for most of my adult life, I'm very pleased to be able to do my own taxes. The user interface is logical and I like being able to proceed at my own pace. The software easily captures essential information and raises questions at the right time to ensure that I minimize mistakes. I plan to keep using this software in the future!

Happy with Refund

Need improvements on deleting a state tax if you accidentally installed the wrong version. Won't to do what if I moved to the state that had income taxes and took me 30 minutes to figure out how to parcel remove it. under the one free down loaded. but you could allow some button and questions to allow complete removal.

I must be a Cranky Old Coot!

I have been using this tool for decades. I have lived through the changes and the necessary upgrades from Deluxe to Premier, and even using Home & Business at times. My two complaints have to do with the ability to import bank and stock account information. First, it is limited in the amount of data that can be imported. I have used Betterment to create multiple portfolios for different purposes, and Betterment's ability to use fractional stock entries greatly increases the number of transactions it creates. It overwhelmed TurboTax's ability to import, so much that TurboTax offered a refund. More critically, Intuit has turned a blind eye to the modern age of password management. I do not know what my back accounts' passwords are, because they are 12-20 characters of random digits that my password manager handles for me effortlessly. Until needed by TurboTax. Because I am not able to cut and paste those passwords from my password manager (LastPass is my tool of choice), I must view those passwords on the screen and attempt to enter them by keystroke. I say "attempt," because it required several tries to get them entered correctly. Given Intuit's backwards thinking on security, they do not show my entry on the screen, which is a great feature if you are worried about shoulder-surfing in Starbucks. I do not do my taxes in Starbucks. On a positive note, it did not lock me out of my accounts or TurboTax after repeated password failures. To summarize, I reach for TurboTax every year, because it works. It retrieves the necessary information from my previous year's data, and guides me through the process. It then aggravates me during the data import process from banks and stock accounts, making me question my commitment to Intuit. Then rinse and repeat each year. I must be a happy customer, right? Well, fix those 2 issues, and it gets a 5-star excellent rating. Loss of a star for each defect.

comprehensive, detailed prompts

The option to download information and figures from other sites has expanded and improved this year. The dividends and capital gains section was much easier to understand and provided all the required information in the drop-down selections, though they were out-of-sequence from my 1099 forms.

Thorough, helpful and easy!

TurboTax is great. I have used it for several years and I am completely satisfied with it. The software helps step through everything I might have a question about and has tips for saving taxes in the future. I will keep using TurboTax and I highly recommend it. I only spotted one thing that needs to be corrected in the Premier Edition. In "Rental Property", the "Insurance Premiums" Section has two "Theft Insurance" statements. Only one is needed (i.e. Theft insurance, Fire insurance, Casualty insurance, Theft insurance). In such a complex program, that is not a big problem... TurboTax is great. I appreciate the many people responsible for producing such a fantastic product. Thank you.

Section 15a.453A-1(c)(3)(i) problem

According to IRS code Section 15a 453A-1(c)(3)(i), if a seller's future contingent payments under an installment sale become worthless, deduction of the seller's remaining basis in the sale can be accelerated and deducted in the current year. Further, the IRS says to use the same form as the one used to report the original installment sale. In this case, that meant using Form 6252. However, Turbotax will not allow a negative number to be entered on form 6252 and will not allow you to e-file the return as long as a negative number is entered on Form 6252. This appears to be a programming problem with no work around.

Redundant Information

I would like to see address, birthdates etc. that remain the same to be carried over on all forms. If for some reason they are not the same a person can change them. There is no reason a person should have to keep typing in Redundant Information; this includes information from employers and their information from previous years. If you want you could ask if the person wants to export the previous years employers information.

Claiming Depreciation on Rental Houses

I wish you would put more guidance in claiming the amount of depreciation when you sell a rental house, rather than just fill in the blanks. Also I made a spread sheet on all depreciation since I bought the houses and found that the cumulative depreciation on my turbotax Depreciation and Amortization Report was lower for some reason. Bear in mind that I have been using turbotax every year that I owned the houses that were sold in 2017. Also an improvement (new furnace) made on both houses in 1992 was not listed on the Report for each house. So I believe some things, including depreciation claimed, were not carried forward for some reason on the Report.

poor handling of Roth IRA conversion

The interview is getting harder to follow every year and this year I noticed an issue on my form 8606 that led me to find TurboTax has issues on my 8606 the last 2 years and my taxable income for last year, requiring 2 amended 8606 and 1 amended return with taxes due. The Roth IRA conversions require the taxpayer to go into the Wages and Income section, somewhere I"d never think to explore for IRA contributions and conversions. I think it's a very poor setup.

Price gouging on filing State return

Pet complaint: When a State return electronic filing is rejected through no fault of the taxpayer and cannot be fixed then TurboTax should refund the electronic filing fee. Often input changes to the Federal return will completely hose the State return. This is seriously BAD programming by Turbo Tax.
