Finally Done!

What keeps me coming to the Premium version are the download links to brokers, the internal links from form to form, and the thoroughness of most of the interviews. What nearly drives me away are the glib assumptions in some interviews, the confusing foreign tax credit interview and the do-loops I seem to get into, and god help you if you have to deal with a K-1!

Doug's review

Have used TurboTax for many years. My only complaint is that for the 2nd year in a row it doesn't print out my Federal Estimated Tax vouchers, only the state vouchers. I have to go hunt to find the Fed stuff. It used to print the Federal vouchers out along with my whole return. Please fix.

Too much manual work

TT provided limited support for annualization method on form 2210 (Underpayments). I had to manually calculate AMT and Net Investment Income Tax on an annualized basis for each quarter. TT was not updated with tax reform changes that affect the calculation of 1040ES federal estimated taxes for 2018, for example: elimination of personal exemption deduction, Schedule A SALT deduction limited to $10,000, increase in standard deduction amount. TT provided limited support for calculating 2018 estimated taxes. It provided no guidance calculating “other” 2018 taxes such as the AMT and the Net Investment Income Tax. I had to manually calculate forms 1040, 6251, and 8960, and schedules A and D to produce the necessary information. I had to try to account for 2018 tax reform changes since 2018 versions of some of these forms where not yet available from the IRS. TT did not inform me that I may be able to reduce the amount of my Maryland state return underpayment penalty by using annualized tax payments or income on MD form 502UP and there was no interactive data entry support to do so. I had to figure this out on my own and manually enter the data in forms mode. TT provided limited support for calculating MD estimated taxes, e.g. I am asked to enter net adjustments to income instead of being guided through the components of this amount.

I feel that it was as thorough as a tax advisor, although there were some assumptions made with the AMT questions. I like to prepare my taxes since I am ultimately responsible for them, but can't afford hours and hours of calculations and switching back and forth from worksheet to worksheet and from form to form. TurboTax was a perfect combination of speed and thoroughness.

most problematic version turbotax i have ever used ihave used for about 10 yrs. i lived thru the basic vs permium turmoil a few yrs ago with the unannounced need to upgrade to premium if stocks involved the 2017 version is clogged with stonewalls to overcome in order to efile..most of the customers who buy turbotax i suspect are not CPA,s and i doubt that i am alone in complete disgust with the stress and tension trying to maneuver to the file now tab i likely will switch to tax cut next year

Horrible & Insecure

I use TurboTax because the tax code is still so complex. ItsDeductible is owned by your company. Yet, you make the integration with TurboTax so difficult that I was forced to file an extension. I could not get access to my ItsDeductible account from within TurboTax. Then, I looked this problem up and your website says it was fixed months ago. Yet, it took me two more hours of research, and what seemed like an infinite loop where I had to enter my PC password 15 times, before I nearly gave up and (on the third or fourth try of entering my PC password 12 or 15 times) must have accidentally hit the right button so I was finally able to access ItsDeductible. After that I was forced to change my PC password since I have no idea how many times it was sent to your server. Part of the problem was that it talked about a "keychain": but I've never used one on my computer (a Mac). You should allow the user to enter directly into the ItsDeductible website, or have that option. This has been my most frustrating year yet. OK, that is just the time wasted part. Each year, we pay a lot of AMT. Most or all of our state income tax deduction is erased. Yet, whenever - in the over ten years of using any year / any version of TurboTax - that we've had a state income tax refund ... TurboTax says that it is taxable. It offers a choice something like "you can recalculate last year's return, but this is complicated" - but I've tried multiple years as an experiment and it may was well tell me to download all the tax forms from the IRS since it provides zero automation or guidance on how to do so. Thus, you claim you are getting me the maximum refund but I'm convinced that I'd have to hire an accountant to file ten or more years of 1040X forms to recover all the federal tax I've paid on state income tax refunds when I should not have had to pay any tax since it was not deducted due to AMT in the prior year.

It works

Been using Turbo Tax for many years. It works fine, but it always leaves me scratching my head over a few details here and there. Not entirely Turbo Tax's fault, of course, as it has to do with my tax forms from Vanguard mutual fund accounts. Still, it would seem that TT could anticipate these details and make things easier. I'm sure I'm not the only person who ends up puzzled here and there each year.

Good program, easy to use

Good program and good value overall. Some suggestions for the programmers: - Combine some of the screens, e.g. enable listing info for several charities or several related income sources on one screen instead of having multiple data entry pages for each one - Allow a screen to be edited without triggering a walk-through of a whole series of subsequent screens - Provide for 2-sided printing in such a way that the front and back of a form appear on the same sheet, instead of mixing forms and even mixing state and federal returns on the same sheet

HORRIBLE

HAD SIMPLE DOCUMENTS TO FILE, SPENT ALMOST 4 HOURS ATTEMPTING TO GET PAST THE 1099 MISC FORM BECAUSE IT WOULD ONLY TAKE IT AS "MY" BUSINESS. I'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH TURBOTAX UNTIL THIS YEAR AND I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. I WILL BE LOOKING FOR OTHER METHODS NEXT TAX SEASON FOR SURE.

Great Year After Year

We use TurboTax every year and have for many many years. Never have we had any issues filing or being audited. Granted, our taxes may not be the most complex, but their not black and white either. TurboTax makes a daunting annual task actually interesting and educational while giving you the security of a solid tax submission.
