Love TurboTax!

I use TurboTax to do my tax returns every year, and it's so simple and easy to use! It took me no more than maybe 20 minutes. They are also very thorough in their questions, but make the information easy to understand. A little bit pricey for me, but ultimately worth every penny. Love it!

Easy, pleasey

Very easy step by step program. Was able to go through it all and feel good about sending my returns in for filing. Love the way it transfers needed information to double check with last years returns. Then just fills in all the information used each year.

Mommy on a Budget!

My dad used to do my taxes for free for me when i was younger with Turbo Tax. He always pre-ordered online for easy store pick up. The whole process seemed so simple! He is an accountant and I know he is busy so i thought I would do it on my own. Intimidated I went to a store and they took hundreds of dollars off of my refund! I didnt know until I later found Turbo Tax free tax calculator online. The next year (last year) I decided I would follow in my fathers footsteps and purchase the program. I did mine and my boyfriends taxes. This year EVERYTHING was already there!! I only had to update our earnings and it was basically done! Last year I thought "I will try to go on the states website to do my state taxes free", but I had to reenter everything and make sure it all matched. It intimidated me! So I went back on to Turbo tax and submitted the state refund and paid with my debit card. This year it was even EASIER yet again! I just filed both Federal and State at the same time. They were able to deduct the fee from my Federal return. NO MONEY UP FRONT! I had enough $$ coming back to cover it and then some! Even with the price of the Turbo Tax Software and our small processing fees, we both still saved HUNDREDS compared to going to a retailer! It walks you through step by step and explains things if needed.. They should almost rename it Filing Taxes for Dummies because it is literally THAT EASY!! I can even offer to help a few close friends as it allows you to enter several on one computer! Helping my friends they are generally super nice and have given me thank you cards with free coffee certificates! Whats not to love about all that?!

Always easier with TurboTax

I have been using TurboTax since the first year it was available. I did try another product one year and was not happy with it. TurboTax is always accurate, easy to use and I can always go back several years to review past taxes by keeping the yearly programs on my computer. The only problem I have is the surprise every year that I have to pay for State e-filing. Certainly not necessary and I wish TurboTax would get rid of that surprise.

Refund a Go Go

I have used turbo tax for several years now after a coworker convinced me to try it and that I would be able to use it successfully. He was right and I have learned a lot about taxes I would not have learned had a taken it to the local tax preparation service.

Handling Retirement Information Could Be Better

I would like to see a selection indicator or check box before the wage/W2 section appears. This would either send you directly to the Statement of Annuity Paid or W2 information. A simple "is this an Annuity Y/N" would suffice. Instead of being prompted by the W2 section to enter information that an Annuity statement does not contain - somewhat confusing. If a retiree needs to enter additional wage information i.e. a W2 then go back to the W2 section.

Just OK

Have used Turbo Tax since it first came out years ago. Over the years the questioning for each area was clear and concise until this version (2017). Many of the questions had no explanation and weren't clear on just what they were asking. Some questions were asked multiple times and if you backed up on the forms it then advanced into different sets of questions. Totally confusing.

Provide a feature to alphabetize donation list after new donations have been added. Every other record of my donations is in alphabetical order. Comparing records from year to year becomes a problem when the TurboTax list is not in the same order. The ability to alphabetize the TurboTax list would eliminate the problem.

Not too happy

After years of use, I'm increasingly dissatisfied with the cost to buy and to file. Sadly forced I to look at other tax prep alternatives before I sign on to TurboTax again. And that's sad. Ease of use is also not moving forward, repeatedly having to click through details of already completed sections just to review one aspect of the section. Still lots to like, but the aggravation level seems to be rising. And where's the quick look at the 2018 taxes. I've done a bunch of forecasting and planning myself. Can't intuit rough up something informal to shed some light on the topic. (Or does it come up after this review tab?)

It needs help

(a) Married joint vs separate filing: Year after year, the TT advice is that usually filing joint is better. That doesn't cut it, especially when state taxes are concerned (since you'll file the same way for state). My state, Ohio, is notorious for abusing couples who file jointly. Of course, TT does tell you to do your taxes both ways to be sure, but that requires entering data twice. What TT should do is tell you to create separate returns for each spouse - and then provide a utility to merge those 2 returns automatically into a joint return for comparison. That would be quite convenient and helpful - and it's simple programming on the TT side. (b) State refunds from last year: Millions of people have them - and in some cases they're taxable. Since I did my 2016 taxes in TT and loaded them into my 2017 return, TT should figure if my state refund last year is taxable this year. It does not. TT asks me if I itemized (it knows this already) - and then tells me to go back and refigure my taxes from last year myself. Otherwise, they say, we'll just treat all of your refund is taxable. (c) IRA recharacterizations and conversions: IRAs, including any non-deductible contributions, are handled in two separate areas. I don't understand why. And the interview questions are somewhat misleading. If you had IRA withdrawals, recharacterizations and/or conversions, you really need to understand what your tax implications are and how the values should appear on the final Federal forms. Otherwise, you may end up paying way more tax than you should. (d) And finally ... once again ... for my wife's return, TT issues payment vouchers for estimated taxes. She's getting a refund this year (albeit small), as she has every year. She's never had to pay estimated taxes. Never.
