15 year user

I will never use the e-filing for the state again. I've used Turbo Tax for over 15 years. Signing up to e-file the state was a nightmare. Evidently I didn't have an account with Intuit before. It rejected at least 6 passwords. The whole process was so time consuming that I wished I had gone to the post office.

Refund this year!!!

I found it necessary to go online to the Turbotax site to find out how to enter expenses for volunteer activities at a nonprofit. It was a little difficult and unclear. Once I figured it out the rest was easy. Overall this is a good product and saved me a lot of money.

Watch for Errors

First year in many years of use that I ran into a bug that would not allow me to submit my taxes. Once the update took care of it, I read on the community page that I would have to reenter all of my medical details after deleting the medical form in the program. That worked but was a big extra effort. Then I discovered another bug if you select Optional Farm Method for the Self Employment tax calculation. It calculated at least one line wrong and caused a big SE tax to be rendered. By going back and using the regular long form, the problem disappeared. If I didn't know better, this would have gotten through and cost me around $1000 in my refund. There may be other problems that didn't affect me or I missed. Either way this is not acceptable.

A bit frustrating

I have used TurboTax for many years, typically buying the CD at Costco. Two years ago I bought the on-line version, only to find out that it did not link to prior returns. This means that I had to manually enter all the personal information and prior year carryovers, etc., by hand. Ouch. This year I went back to the Costco CD method. Oops. Now I have the same problem, in reverse. It would not look up my 2016 taxes. So once again, I had to do everything from scratch. I guess next year I will stick with Costco, just to maintain consistency.

Good system, decent price

Turbo Tax is thorough with its questions and has a lot of sections that take you through things that would otherwise be difficult. It is a little bit expensive, because you think you've purchased everything you need to file, but they always come up with some other expense in the end. Also could use more instructions in certain areas to prevent redundancies. Overall a very helpful tax preparation system.

OK State Return

Imported stock sale data just fine, and because we switched advisors last year there was a lot. That being said , when it transferred to the OK return, OK wanted some specific buy dates even though the 1099B listed buy dates for some mutual funds as various. Works for the feds- you would think it would be fine for the state. Furthermore, the state wants to know one of three things-the location of the company in OK , or the fed ID number, or check the box to say not applicable for the capital gains exclusion. SO! TT says pls review the list. You work your way down the list, check the not applicable box for the majority of the items. However, after you check one box TT starts over at the top of the list. So you have to scroll down,, find the net line, enter the data or check not applicable, and TT takes you to the top of the list. When you are going thru one hundred plus lines, it is a nightmare. So you think you have entered the right info, hit continue, and TT says not so fast, pls review the whole list of entries, not just the ones that still need an answer, And guess what , it starts again at the top of the list. After a few hours, I got a drink and asked my wife to check the data. She worked on it for at least an hour. I realize it is a state return , and OK isn't one of the more populous states, but maybe you all can see what you can do to improve the experience. I didnt experience this problem last year that I remember, but for sure I didnt have the number of transaction. I think some of the stocks had 20 or more transaction, a few shares at a time, because some were bought through DRIPs, and God knows the feds and all the accountants want to track every firggin dollar you make even if it costs someone, not them, a dollar's worth of time or effort to report it. Well, filed for another year. Thanks

Makes Tax Prep Quick & Easy

I have been using Turbo Tax for over 15 years. It has always been easy and accurate. I especially like the feature that allows download of financial information from banks, credit unions, and investment firms. I have never worried that my taxes were not accurate as long as I entered accurate information. E-Filing is also a huge plus. It couldn't be easier to file the tax return when it's complete.

Mostly good

Really, the Federal form is good, but there needs to be a lot of work done on the Indiana form explanation. It is NOT easy to understand from the online instructions. It is NOT clear, and there is no link to visit to get the information. It is just assumed that you know what these questions are about. If you do a search, it returns stuff that is not about Indiana. I had to leave TurboTax twice to find the info I needed.

Difficult Transactions

We had a complex 1031 exchange to report involving multiple properties. Turbo Tax has the forms for reporting the exchange, but no clear instructions how to report an unusual transaction. there was no way to add additional explanatory pages as IRS instruction suggest, so we had to guess at the proper way to report the transaction in Turbo Tax using multiple exchange forms rather than just one. We're hoping this method flies.

2017 Trouble

Have been using Turbotax for many years now. I like how it walks me through the various tax subjects. However, this year I needed to add in education expenses to offset the 529 distribution and the software still calculated that I had a taxable gain, even though my distributions were less than my total qualified expenses. It took lots of digging through the software to find what I needed to correct in order to get rid of the gain. Finding it was not easy or intuitive as it was buried in a generic sounding topic.
