Excellent upgrade!

This machine is much better than an earlier model (from 10 yrs ago). From the convenience of making custom bags quickly, to a better quality seal with more air removed this is one of my favorite purchases. The multiple settings, various containers, many applications, and money saved make this machine one of my favorite kitchen appliances.

Perfect for my needs

I've been using this for a few months now and is been fantastic. The accessory feature and accessories like the marinate container and can sealer and bags had a steep learning curve. But, I'm thrilled by the lack of frost bite and the sous vide applications. Plus, I've discovered an air free environment does wonders for cold brewed coffee, so that was an unexpected benefit.

Great Sealer!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a review of the Foodsaver FM 5380. I recently received this item and I will go through my experiences of unboxing through my first few uses. Unboxing: The sealer arrived in its regular box with the shipping label attached, not in an extra box. I like that to save packaging! Just a slit of the tape and I was in. The sealer was packaged nicely, and was easy to get unwrapped. It had a piece of styrofoam on each end and was wrapped in plastic. All I needed to do to get it ready was look at the quick use guide, plug it in and go. Setting up: I took it out of the box, unwrapped the cord from the back, and plugged it in. It has a cavity on back that you can wrap the cord around so its not dangling around when trying to store the sealer. Nice touch there. The sealer came with several bags and a roll of material to seal things in custom size bags. I inserted the roll, sealed the first end and was ready to go. Sealing: The first thing I sealed was some chicken thighs I bought on sale to freeze. I used the custom bag maker to seal these. I put three thighs in each bag I made. The sealer has a part where you insert the bag and press it down and the sealer grabs the bag and automatically vacuums and seals. That's right, it does it automatically! I did not know this was a feature before I received the Foodsaver, and it is awesome. I was afraid I would spill chicken juice everywhere and make a mess, but NOPE! The sealer has a drip tray built in just in case, but I did not experience any juices coming past where the machine sealed the bag. So now I have chicken ready to go in custom sized baggies. I wanted to try out the regular bags too, so I went to seal up some veggies. For some reason, I can't get any vegetables to last more than a week in there without getting slimy and gross. I took the veggies(carrots, celery) and put them in and sealed the bag. For these bags, you have to use the handheld sealer part. It pulls out of the sealer and also retracts automatically back in, nice and easy. So I put the sealer on the port in the bag and pressed the handheld button. Again, the Foodsaver started vacuuming and sucked all the air out and stopped automatically when it was finished. Doesn't get any better than that. Now I have a great machine to seal up lots of different things. I am going to do some meatloaf, lots more chicken, and try out some different fruits and vegetables. I am also going to get some of the vacuum jars to try as well. I am very impressed with how well it all works, especially since it does all the work for me. I just say go and it does the rest. It is also very lightweight and not too big, so storage will not be an issue for me. Five stars all around for the Foodsaver FM5380! **I received this product as a sample to review, but it really is a great machine!**

Don't buy it

I gave this a 1 star because the product works well but don't try to get it fixed. It has worked well for 5 + years but the accessory hand held portion stopped working. I thought it would be an easy. I wrote them, this is what I got. I will be more than happy to assist you further with your case but firstly, if you could please provide me with some additional information and photographs about the product you own. 1. Digital images of the product in question with the case number written on a piece of paper near the product. Your case number is 45112829. 2. Proof of purchase (if available) 3. Photo of the sticker (zoomed in) which includes the model number of your product 4. Photo of the Date Code The date code can usually be found stamped on the bottom of the product or on the metal prong of the electrical cord. The format of this will be a letter followed by three numbers and two letters (eg. K123WL). Please find attached to this email an image showing how model number and manufacturing date code might look like. Once I have received this information, we will contact you with how we can proceed to resolve this as efficiently as possible.

almost perfect

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Foodsaver FM5460 2 in 1 system is a pretty awesome machine. It looks nice on the counter, doesn't take up too much space, and generally performs as expected. It took a little getting used to when first using it on moist foods. Once we figured that out, it was a breeze. The system is a bit bulky to start, but again, after with practice, it's pretty awesome. I would give it a full 5 stars, except it's not completely perfect. It does leave some small air pockets in the packages and does seem a bit temperamental with moist foods, but other than that, it's pretty awesome. As a short disclaimer, I received this product as a sample for review.

Money saving machine

Though I did not purchase this item for myself, I originally had the 4850 series machine and it was totally irreplaceable to me. The retractable marinator part broke on it and Food saver not only worked with me to replace the unit, for a newer model I might add, they did it at their expense. I also received many additional items to use with the machine that I have not purchased individually yet, though I do have the sealing lid, sealed marinator container (awesome!!) I am returning my damaged one this week. I am incredibly pleased with the machine and encourage anyone who wants to save money to purchase one. I originally started with the small sealer and have worked my way up. Small expense, big big savings. This one I am purchasing for my brother who hunts a lot. I know he will use it like crazy!!

Fantastic

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have owned four foodsavers in the past. This unit is by far the best one yet. I would have given it 5 stars, but gave it 4 because of the drip pan. If it gets full, getting it out without spilling takes some skill. It is at a tilt and hard to get out. I love the seal and cut. It does save on bag material. The vacuuming feature is outstanding. I can lift the clear window and place the bag exactly where I want it, pull the sides taunt and lean on the vacuum bar when ready. It prevents sealing over folds. I love this feature. I haven't searched for a cover, but definitely would buy one for sure.

A Kitchen Bonus

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I opened my FM500 2 in 1 Food Preservation System without any preconceived notions about how it would work. After using it several times now, I am pleasantly satisfied with its usefulness and its stellar performance. I found it to be easy to use, even for novice such as me. The product is durable and built to last. The five year warranty on the product adds in my confidence in the product’s overall quality. The labels on the product assist in making the product easy to operate. The kit contains several seal and zipper bags, and a container to hold leftovers. I used the retractable handheld sealer first. It was effective in sealing fresh seafood that remained just as fresh over the 1.5 weeks that it remained in my freezer. One huge positive is the one touch bar for vacuuming and sealing food. One touch really does the job for you! The vacuum view window allows you to see exactly what you are doing during the sealing process. I have found that my fruit used for my daily beverage blend stays fresher longer now that I am sealing with the food preservation system. The product operates relatively quiet and without excessive interruption for others in the home. While there are several wonderful benefits of the product, it does have one weakness and that is it has a short electrical cord. Due to the short cord, I am pretty much confined in where it can be used on my kitchen counter. A slighter longer cord would be a tremendous improvement in the product as it would give more flexibility and versatility. On a scale of 1-5 stars with five being the highest, I rate the product as a 4. Disclaimer: I was given this product to sample.

Terrible Design

I bought this food saver when my last one (which I loved) gave out. Like I said, I loved the last one. It worked wonderfully. This model however is difficult to use. The way the vacuum sealing mechanism is set up basically requires you to stand the bag up or use a bowl to hold it up while it does it’s thing. It wastes so much of the bag And they are not cheap!

Light Weight-Easy to Use

I bought the back in October 2019 to replace another older Food Saver model. This one is by far better, it is lighter and easier to use. I purchase but meat and se this machine often. I also prepare bulk food items such as soups, sauces, meatloaf, twice baked potatoes, the list is endless. I have ready go to meals for the days that I choose to not cook. The home cooked frozen meals are 100% healthy and the cost is minimal. I've been using Food Saver equipment for at least 20 years, this is a kitchen appliance that I will never give up.
