Exciting Upgrade, Gums Hurt, Gunk Everywhere
We were excited to upgrade to the Oral-B iO Series 5 Twin Pack, as we’ve been loyal to Oral-B for over two decades. At first, it was cool to be connected to the app, with the timer and many modes it offered.
We started with the “Daily Clean” mode, but it was too harsh and caused gum irritation. We had to switch to “Gum Care” or “Sensitive,” which made the extra modes feel less useful.
The biggest downside is the design. After a few weeks, black gunk started building up. We don’t know if it’s mold, rust, or something else, it’s impossible to see where it’s coming from. Even with daily cleaning and drying, residue still comes out while brushing, which is very unpleasant. The brush also doesn’t sit securely on the charger and falls off often.
I also tried contacting the company, but there wasn’t an easy way to send feedback, and I didn’t have time to call. Overall, the quality doesn’t meet expectations and requires too much maintenance. I preferred their older models. Just wanted future buyers to be aware.
reply from Oral-B
We certainly appreciate your incredible loyalty to Oral-B over the years, and we're sorry to hear that this has been your experience with our iO Series 5 toothbrushes. We can assure you that we have strict quality checks in place to ensure that you can use our brushes with ease, and they've also been thoroughly evaluated to be safe when used as directed. We'd like to mention that, while it’s rare, mold can develop after use if the brush is stored in a damp area or comes into contact with certain cleaning agents or soaps that can make the plastic porous. Also, toothpaste can harden over time, creating a chalky coating that may appear black, brown, orange, pink, or grey on the metal shaft, rubber parts, and joints, as well as on the charger. Water and toothpaste can also collect on the brush head and handle, leaving a residue that varies in color depending on your toothpaste and water hardness. To prevent this, it’s important to clean and dry your brush after each use. You can clean your brush by rinsing the brush head under running water with the handle on. Then, switch it off, remove the head, clean both parts separately, and dry them before reattaching. We hope this is helpful. We'll be sure to share this with our team, and we do recommend that you discontinue use of this particular product if you're experiencing any sort of discomfort.
