Germination times on label are based upon the grass type in the bag that will germinate the quickest. For Cool Season Grasses (Bluegrass, Ryegrass, and Fescue) Soil temperatures must be at least 55 degrees (+12.7 Celsius) for grass seed to germinate. Warm season grasses (Bermudagrass, Centipede and Zoysia), which germinates in early summer, requires soil temperatures between 75 - 90 degrees (24 - 32 Celsius). The warmer the soil, the faster the germination. This generally requires daytime temperatures consistently in the 65+ degrees (18.3 Celsius) range for cool season grasses, and 80+ (27+ Celsius) for warm season grasses. In the spring it takes a lot of consistent warm temperatures to warm up the soil, especially in the northern states. Cool night-time temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Cold weather will delay germination but will not hurt the seed. We recommend watering 1-2 times per day to keep the seeds moist, until seed germinates. Then, we recommend watering about 1-1 1/2" per week as needed. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination. Weed control used prior to seeding such as a Crabgrass Preventer will prevent seed from germinating. Weed control product used on new seedlings - such as Turf Builder Weed & Feed or Ortho Weed-B-Gon (Killex in Canada) will kill seedlings when they first germinate.We want you to be confident in our products.
