For better results, the optimal temperature of your dishwasher water should range between 125-140 F (52 -60 C). Position dishes and utensils with the heavily soiled side facing the source of the water spray. The white residue you describe sounds like it could possibly be from hard water buildup. Using Finish Jet-Dry Rinse agent will help water sheet off dishes, leaving fewer water spots, filming and allowing dishes and glassware to dry more quickly.
