Quicken still seems to be the gold standard for personal finance software - there are other "freemium" services out there but they're free or cheap at the cost of your data. Quicken Desktop is actively under development %26 although I'm not a huge fan of the subscription model, I understand the need since it does connect to almost any financial institution and automatically bring in transactions.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am a long time fan of Quicken and use it extensively for tracking spending, investments, and rental properties. When it became a subscription-based product, it was improved significantly; old bugs were finally removed and it continues to improve. But the subscription price is a bit high. A full retail box product can be bought for less than the annual subscription renewal fee and that license can then be applied to extend one's current subscription by a year. Big savings!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Quicken does not have a competitor -- and it shows. When it works, the features are good. But, I have had multiple failures where the database became corrupted and the program constantly crashed. The last 5 months have been better. The user interface in clunky and outdated. Finally, it is awfully slow even on my high end computer.

The download function from banks, credit cards, and financial institutions does not always work.

Average software. It is better than trying to track everything using Excel, but there's a lot of glitches and the download function s frequently has issues. Some Discover transactions are mis-attributed (card data is duplicated from one CC to another, despite resetting, etc.), and there are frequently mis-memorized transactions (translating downloaded payee/item codes to the wrong account). Potentially, due to a high number of accounts, it gets confused and tries to make transfer transactions to wrong accounts, throwing balances off after downloading bank data.

I come from Quickbooks (old Mac version) and thought I can do the same as I did in the past in Quicken. I bought the Classic Business %26 Personal desktop version. It came on time, installation was pretty straight forward. I am glad I didn't enter any personal or payment information during the setup. Once I started to map my business accounts I quickly run into issues: I couldn't enter the ledger structure I had in Quickbooks. I run an small family office and have diverse investments incomes and business expenses. That all rolls up into my personal tax return via the llc tax return. I tried to add some income accounts, but they tend to show up constantly under "personal". Wasn't able to figure that out. I tried to move some preprogrammed income accounts over to the business side, that didn't work either. In the end I came to the conclusion that this version of Quicken isn't for me. I don't have a complicated structure at all. But I need to accomodate the cpa with my general ledger (not available), the balance, income statement for the llc totally separate from any personal information. Any hint of crossing business / personal wouldn't be good. So, I returned it (overall expense $85.98) and bought the Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2024 Lifetime for $263.50. Obviously more, and I might run out of support after 2027 as Quickbooks stops supporting desktop versions. At least I can add/change accounts, have a general ledger etc. Quickbooks is expensive, I don't like subscriptions but I had to move forward as I need to get ready for TR 2025.
